dress alterations- zipper to corset back?

anyone alter the zipper on the back of their dress to have a lace up corset instead?  I knew I wanted to do this before I bought my dress, but never bothered researching where/ how much/ who is good at it :)  please let me know if you have had this type of alteration with good results.  Thanks!

Re: dress alterations- zipper to corset back?

  • I had the same thing done to my dress and am *SO* glad that I did!  It makes life much easier (for me, not the people who have to put the dress on me!) because you don't have to worry that you can't gain or lose an inch since it makes the dress much more adjustable.  Also, I just think it looks beautiful, even though it meant I lost those fabric-covered buttons that went down the back.  I can't speak to who does that work well in your area because I am not from New Orleans.  I can tell you that the seamstress that did my alterations charged ~$350 total for changing it to a corset back, a 10-point bustle, and doing a few other minor alterations.  The dress came out even better than it looked when I first tried it on.  Good luck!

    Great, thanks please do!
  • Here are the pics of the back of my dress. It originally had a zipper. The seamstress removed the zipper and sewed the in the Laceeis Corset kit.

  • where did you have the alterations done and how much did it cost you even after providing the kit?
  • hmmm....I wonder if that would work for me...I want the 'V' of the corset much wider, however.  I wonder the kit allows for that?

The kit comes with the corset loops already attached to a piece that gets sewn onto your dress on each side of where the zipper would be. It also comes with the ribbon to lace it up. There are several colors to choose from. You can make the V of the corset as wide or narrow as you need it. It just depends on how your dress fits you before adding the corset back.

I used a seamstress in Slidell, LA (a friend of a friend). She works from her home. I paid her around $80 for sewing in the corset kit, hemming my dress, and taking up my dress in the sleeve area. She did a terrific job.
