alcohol question how much?

My caterer doesn't supply the alcohol.  I don't really have any idea of how to budget or how much to get.  Does anyone have any ideas?I haven't been on here in a while because I didn't know when my wedding was actually going to happen, now I think it may happen this December.  I have a lot to do.TIA!

We're doing this and we will give the guy at the liquor store the number of people over 21 and # of guests and then he will recommend how much to get...then we're going to ask for some extra just in case...we were at a wedding recently that ran out of alcohol at 8...not happening with us!

Ditto Bmore... We provided our own alcohol and we went to the local liquor store and talked to the owner. We told him how many beer/liquor drinkers we thought we may have coming... He gave us his opinion, gave us a quote and they even offer a return policy on unopened bottles. It was great. We got about $500 back after returning the bottles we didnt use. HTH

A long time ago there was a knottie named HMWende that had a wonderful bio that included info on how to put together your own bar.  Like "Sulla's Tips," that document has floated around the Baltimore board for years.   I'm not sure if anyone around here still has a copy of it.

I wanted to add that one really good way to keep the cost of self-hosted bars down is to limit the types of alcohols you offer.  For example don't get Baileys Irish Cream AND Kahlua, they are pretty similar and most people that like one will drink the other.  If you offer both, then you'll probably have 1/2 a bottle of each left over at the end of the night, and at $24 each per bottle, that adds up.
