Parent gift idea

ok so Fi and I have been struggling with the whole parent gift thing...we wanted to do something nice for them since they have give us so much but the thing is both have said not to get them anything (like we will listen) and the truth is money is pretty tight now especially after getting a house...WDYT...i suggested giving them a 'coupon' of some sorts inviting them to a special dinner at our new place after the wedding.  Is this stupid??  I thought the best gift is the gift of your time and I thought both of our parents will enjoy this.  Is this dumb?

Regardless of the circumstances - house, money, etc - this is a very thoughtful gift.  It seems like you are both very close with your families so I think they will enjoy a nice dinner with you two at your new house.  You could even make a little fancy - cocktail attire, special drinks...etc.  Just a thought.

I think a dinner afterwards with both sets of parents is a very nice idea.  I think they would really like that.We got our parents a mini version of our wedding album but they wont get it for months.  We also got them a double sides frame...one side will have their wedding picture and the other side will have ours.  Thats something pretty inexpensive and something they will truly cherish!

I think that is a nice idea! I know both our parents always are saying they never get invited over enough!...what I would do instead of a "coupon", you could print up a nice invite on fancy paper, you could even include a menu on there, I did that with FI once when a dinner was his "gift" for our 1 yr anniversary...It made me feel like I was actually giving him "something" rather than an "IOU"

I was going to suggest with the dinner idea, maybe also an inexpensive but pretty picture frame with an IOU inside for a professional portrait of the family when they are ready?

I like the dinner idea! We're getting them a nice engraved frame (we're hitting Things Remembered this weekend to see what they have) with a note thanking them, and letting them know we'll get them an 8x10 photo from the wedding. If we have the cash, we'll throw in gift cards they like, but that's not looking possible right now.
