I'd get a sharpie. if they have dark pages, sharpie has a new white ink pen that I wanted for mine; we ended up using the metallic silver and gold pens and they were fine, but sharpie is IMO the best way to go.

I think Michael's sells archival pens that are supposed to work well, if it's a photo guestbook.

The fine tip sharpies are what I used. They worked great, thin enough to write like a pen, and no smudges at all.

We bought fine point sharpies and fun pens.  They both work great, but I think we're going to go with the pens.

We went to Michael's and got gold, silver and dark red Uni-ball gel pens.  Looked very pretty on our off-white guest book pages, although the silver was a little light.  Not sure if they are archival quality.  Definitely did not bleed through, which I've seen Sharpies do, even on thick paper or card-stock.  Maybe the new Sharpies are better?
