Name Change Question (for the old married ones :))

Just out of curiosity, how long did it take for everyone to get their names legally changed? FMIL booked tickets for all of us to go to a cousin's wedding in July (3 months after our wedding). I was hoping to have everything changed over by then. She booked it all in my maiden name. I wasn't sure how long the process usually took in Ohio, but my understanding from friends was that it was pretty quick. I'm trying to figure out if I should keep it in that name.

TIA!

It takes approx. 2 weeks for your marriage license to come in (the green paper) and then after that you can have it all switched within the day.  Once you get your marriage license you go to Social Security office and have that changed, they give you a paper you take to the BMV and they switch your license over right then and there. I even had all my bills switched over the day after I got married.  Only a couple people (credit card and time share) wanted to see a marriage license, but they just wanted copies.

If its a plane ticket (which I'm assuming it is) I would wait to change your ID over since security is so high.  Unless you can call the airline and ask them to switch the name over and see what they say.

Your name isn't officially changed until you receive your new social security card. I just took my marriage abstract to the ss office and they asked me a few questions and I received my new card in the mail in a few weeks. You can start changing your other bills before you do the new ss card even though some of them may ask for a copy of your marriage license.

You should be fine for the July plane ticketts as long as you get moving on the name change as soon as you are married. Good luck.

I think you will definitely have time to get it all switched.  I got my marriage license in the mail (from Delaware Co.) while we were on our honeymoon, and after going to SS office, it only took like a week to get my new card in the mail.  If she cannot change your maiden name on it (some airlines charge money for changes, etc) to your married name then make sure you don't change it though, because your ID would need to match the ticket.

Oh, and I am assuming this is not out of the country, because then your name on tix should match passport.  I have a passport that is still good for about 5 years, so I am not paying for it to be changed until then.  If I fly out of the country, I will just use my maiden name on tickets.
So, I guess if you have a passport with maiden name, you could change your name with BMV and SSA, but when they ask for ID at gate you can use your passport instead of your updated license.  As long as there is a photo ID and the names match you will be okay.

Once our priest turned in our certificate (maybe took 10 days after the wedding) everything but my passport was changed in a matter of 2 weeks. Drivers license and SS card on the same day. Called credit card companies and bank and received new cards quickly within 10 business days. Passport came 2 or 3 weeks after I requested a new one, but I already had one. I just needed a name change and they require a new photo.
