Y'all are probably sick of hearing about my job search... but I really think I am terrible at this! I applied for a job that sounds right up my alley on Friday. It's a position at Columbus State (Main Campus). The position is similar to what I did when I worked at another university. I have applied to positions with CSCC before and haven't even received a phone call. What should I do to stand out? I don't even know who I would call because I don't know who is in charge of the hiring process. If I got paid for all the resume's I have sent out, i'd be able to retire. LOL

I know this process can be frustrating! From my experience in higher ed, I know a lot of times universities hire from within, making it hard for outside applicants. I think the best thing is to try to make some connections with people at cscc working in your area of interest. They may be hard to track down but it is worthwhile because most often it is not the HR people deciding who is brought in for interviews. Good luck!

I honestly think the best thing you could do for yourself is to have informational interviews with people at places you want to work. If they meet you and you are genuinely interested in hearing about what they do, they will remember your name when you apply. It never hurts to try to set up a meeting with someone just to get coffee and hear about what they do. That strategy has worked for about 3 of my friends.

I second MissOwl.  So many people rely on the internet and don't get the chance to interact face-to-face anymore.  Take the initiative to go and talk to people on campus directly; most applicants won't have done so and it could give you the extra edge.

You might want to check for words in your application that might get it thrown out by computer systems. Many companies use these systems to check for things that can be construed as foul language. Like some of the latin words you might use if you had an acedemic honor for gpa. I am currently in my last semester of my masters and the career services lady was telling us all sorts of words that do this....I should have been paying more attention but honestly I can't think of them. Anyway, I would just call because sometimes these systems kick out applications and maybe that is happening to you.
