I don't want to get ahead of myself..

I literally JUST booked my reception location, but I'm wondering how soon is too soon to send out save-the-dates? I know a lot of friends and family members getting married next summer, my date is in July, on a Friday, so I want to be sure I give plenty of notice so everyone has a chance to attend. I just don't want to be like "MERRY CHRISTMAS, DON'T FORGET MY DAY IN 321982734 MONTHS!". haha.

The general rule of thumb is about 6 months, but you can send it out a little before that--especially if you have a lot of out-of-town guests who will need to make accomidations or know that it is going to be a super busy time for everyone.

I'm not getting married until September 2012 but we are sending ours the first of the year for a number of reasons:

1. Its on a Sunday and a Holiday weekend.
2. I have TONS of family already asking me almost weekly "when is the wedding again?"
3. Some people have to request time off from their jobs in advance. I have a cousin who has to put in her entire 2012 requests by Dec 16th.

I think its ok to break the etiquette rule on this one.

My personal suggestion, don't send it out with the christmas cards, it might get lost. I know that if I got a STD/christmas card, i would put it with the rest of my christmas cards and then at the end of the year, probably throw it out (not on purpose), just a suggestion. 

I know that people on my month board are sending them out at the beginning of the year.

Our wedding is in August and I sent out the STDs about a month ago.  We are friends with 4 other couples who are getting married next year, and we have a decent number of OOT guests, so I wanted to get our info out.  I also didn't want to worry about it interfering with vacation plans, since a number of my relatives cruise or travel internationally.

Haha, I wasn't planning on sending them with Christmas cards - but in my head that's what it sounded like. I'm going to wait until the first of the year when everyone has their minds back in order to send them out. Thanks!

Yup, 6-8 months ahead of the wedding is sufficient.

I think sending them out at xmas time is perfect, you get your holiday cards out, AND save the dates! then you don't have to send twice!!
