Dog allergies and paw licking

My dog has allergies and licks small raw spots on his paws. How do I stop him from doing this? Or how can I reduce itchiness? I give him benadryl everyday when he has a flare up but he wont stop licking his paw so it's not healing. Any tips? I think I'm going to buy some vetrap today and give him a bath with some anti itch shampoo and lotion I got from my previous vet.

my dog had the same thing. my vet actually gave him a shot of something to take down the swelling and he was on an antibiotic for a little bit. We also give him fish oil pills everyday and we gave him claritin and I think it was benadryl also. Poor dog had a lineup of pills to take everyday. The fish oil you can just drizzle a little on his food once a day. It help with their coat. The bath wil help too... let his feet soak in the shampoo for a bit, don't rinse it off right away.

My dog had the same thing. I agree with taking him to the vet for meds. We also had to switch dog foods. That was one of things she was allergic to.

Are the allergies food related? We feed our dog Holistic food because of her food allergies. She was recently itching a lot, and our vet put her on steroids for a short time. It worked well, although I've heard other dogs have accidents because it makes the dogs thirsty & pee a lot. Nelly didn't have that issue.

It's not his food. He has been on the same food (natural balance grain free) for about a year now. I think it's just fall allergies.I'm trying to avoid the vet if possible because I know this is a very common thing with dogs. I just have to find something that works for him so it will heal but I am afraid of infection so we'll see. If I can't get him to leave it alone by Monday I'll make an appointment because this on sore has been there for over a week now.I'm going to stop at petsmart and get some of that DermaCool spray (thanks ericatoms!) and vetwrap and see how that works. I feel so bad for him :(

Our dogs have this problem too.  When it's just a couple of little spots we cut the hair around it REALLY short to try to keep the spot dry and then we spay it with prescription anti-itch - like extra strength derma cool.  And then we put a cone on his head whenever he's alone so that he can't chew on himself.  It's sad but better for him in the long run.  If we don't catch it in time and the spots get bad then we do have to take him in for a steroid injection and he does drink A LOT and pees and it's enough to make me insane.    Sorry for my rambling, in short I recommend cutting the hair and keep the area dry by preventing him from chewing.

Haha, poor pups. My moms dog has been on steroids it's entire life (he has really, really bad allergies) and he will seriously drink almost an entire bowl of water at once and his urine is always crystal clear. I'm amazed at how long he can pee for!

Poor pup! My dog just had the same problem too. She chewed and licked herself until there were raw spots all over her body. We tried to avoid the vet because we thought it was food allergies, or stress (we had just moved from Philadelphia to Michigan, then to Arizona within 1 month). Our friend told us their dog had mange and did the same thing. She let us borrow a cream her vet gave her. We rubbed it on the spots every day for a couple weeks and it finally went away. The cream is called Goodwinol Ointment. Good luck!

25 mg of benedryl per 25 lbs of dog (so 2 pill for a 50 lb dog), twice a day (I usually do it right after my dog eats). I used A&D ointment on his leg (where the wounds were) and wrapped it with self sticking gauze. you just have to watch to make sure they don't try to get the gauze off I think he may continue to lick them because as wounds heal they tend to itch anyway...so try covering them

Fish oil! I swear by it. They have it in pill form or for those that won't take it like my Brody they have it in a pump bottle that you just pump it right on thier food. And they love it! It totally helps keep allergies at bay and makes his coat sooo shiny! Try it ;)
