Update on venue closing

I just got the letter from the venue itself (Genoa Woods/Legendary Events) saying they are closing their doors. No mention of my deposit though. My FI left a message on their machine today at 4:30pm. I'm going to scan the letter in and submit it to my credit card company to dispute the charge. Hopefully I can get the money back. The former chef there has set up a new catering company at a decent venue in Howell. They are having a private open house next week that we are going to. They would honor our contract and not charge us a deposit. We'll see. The thing that is hardest for us is we are trying to stay close to Howell where we live. I know Ann Arbor, Novi, etc seem close to Howell, but my family is already driving 6.5 hours from the UP to the wedding. To have them drive another hour seems like too much. We also have people staying at our house who can't afford a hotel. We are really trying to accomodate our guests so they may attend. Thanks for all your support and I'll keep you posted!

I really hope that you like the venue that you're going to check out! I also hope you get your deposit back!!It seems like you're trying to stay positive, I know it must be frustrating!

that is such a bummer! I really hope the new place turns out ok! I understand the driving issue as well. We have people coming from out of town and I really tried to make sure the drive was not any more inconvienient than it already seemed. And if you aren't from a certain town, driving to another (novi, ann arbor) can seem long! I hope the open house turns out ok!

Man, I can't even imagine how stressed out you are right now, that situation would drive me crazy! When you said you're looking for things near Howell, I know it's 20 minutes away, but I thought of Walden Woods in Hartland, that was one of the places that we considered, just a thought. :)

Good luck with the venue next week - hopefully it works out. Sorry I don't have any advice on places in the area. Definitely do everything to get your deposit back.

Hopefully you find something that works out.  And just a random thought that I had -- you're lucky that your wedding was 7 months out and you will hopefully be able to book another venue that's available on your date.  But what about the people who were havin their wedding there this month???  Are they SOL?

I'm not sure if they had any weddings booked this month. They mostly do summer weddings, but have alot of business events there. The former chef told me they have events next Monday that he's been scrambling around to try and get set up somewhere else. Everyone keeps telling me that I am very lucky that I found out now and not closer to the wedding. I guess so. I still can't believe this is happening to me though!

You should be able to get your deposit back.  Something similar happened to a friend of mine and she got all her money back when she disputed through her credit card company.  Credit cards come in handy in this type of situation!!

I'm so sorry to hear about your situation. I know I'm late to post here, but I hope this may help. I live in Howell and got married last month. We used River Birch Lodge in Hartland (its pretty close) - you get the whole place for 24 hours and it sleeps about 20 people (this helped us a TON with the out of town guests who had already traveled so far). Of couse for the wedding you can put a lot more people (i think its like 150 inside or 250 out). The place it gorgeous. The owners were absolutely wonderful about everything - it might be worth checking out. You bring in your own caterer, so you would be able to work with your budge there. I hope you work things out. Let me know if you want more information on the Lodge!

Oh, and I know you wanted out door, there is a beautiful outdoor area where you can get married - stone area with waterfalls and lots of pretty gardens and stuff. We got rained out, but it is beautiful if you get a good day.
