Knotties please HELP!!! Urgent

Hi Knotties,

I am helping my sister in law plan a last minute wedding due to a family emergency.  The wedding is next Sunday the 16th of January and all we have secured is a location and music.  Still in need of cake, flowers, and possibly hair/make-up.  The budget is very small and the wedding is in Ann Arbor.  I live in another state and am trying to do all the planning for her from a far.  If anyone could shout out some suggestions for specifically CAKE and FLOWERS on the cheap I would greatly appreciate it.  :)  THANK YOU!

LC

Wow! You got your work cut out! Good Luck!! For flowers try April Irelynn Floral & Design. She is wonderful to work with and is very respectful of your budget. For the cake try Milford Baking Company. Good Luck again and sorry about the family emergency

Cake- COSTCO, Sam's Club, Kroger, Wal-mart.  These types of places usually only need a weeks notice and a cheap.  Also you could order a small "show cake" for the bride and groom cutting and then sheet cakes for the caterer to cut as pass to guests (I am doing this and it saved me a lot of money)

Flowers- I did mine myself (bought fake from Michael's) this saved a lot of money and was fun.  If you want real ones COSTCO and Sam's Club have great bulk flowers that you can use to make your own. (Since I did mine this way I don't know of any florists in the area.

    Good Luck!

I'm not sure what your budget is/how many flowers you are looking for on that budget, but one option is Maureen's flower shop in Saline (which is less than 5 miles from Ann Arbor). http://www.maureensdesigns.com/

I wholeheartedly endorse Sam's Club/Costco cakes (and I don't like Meijer cake, FWIW), but if you are looking for a more traditional Cake Baker near Ann Arbor, Gwen's in Saline gets good reviews, and is less than $3/slice.  http://www.gwenscakedecorating.com/index.shtml. There are also a couple boutique places in Ann Arbor that do cupcakes, if that's a route you're interested in.  Cupcake Station comes to mind, cupcakes are $2-$3 a piece, depending on quantity http://www.cupcakestation.com/

Hair/makeup: if you are willing to go to students, there Douglas J. Aveda Institute is in Ann Arbor, which is definitely budget-friendly.  I get my hair cut there and have always been really happy with it.  However, not sure if they are open on Sundays.

I'm actually in Ann Arbor, so if you have more questions on local vendors, let me know and I'll try to help.

Sorry to hear about the emergency. Costco for cake and flowers. Two dozen roses $17. Stop by anytime, they have a kiosk with anywhere from 20-50 different types of arrangements, all $17 and very lush & usually pretty fresh.

Call ahead to order the cake. They also almost always have one or two sheetcakes decorated all in white, with white roses, and a vanilla cream mousse center for I think $15, feeds 48. But if that's what you want, call ahead.

Good luck, it must be stressful.......thank goodness for Costco!

Does Costco do layered wedding cakes or just sheet cakes?

I work at Kroger, and they are doing my flowers.  They will work with you and your budget.  Make sure you call them asap so they have time to order your flowers.  I'm not sure if they will require pre-payment or a deposit.

They also only need 24 hours notice for cakes.  They do sheet cakes and round cakes.  The full sheet cake is about $40 +5 if you want a photo.  Their round cakes only come in 8 inch single and double layers.  However they have pre-made round cakes that are pretty big.  I've seen pink with white chocolate shavings, white icing with a scroll design.  Those are usually $20.  Stop at JoAnn's, Michael's, or Party City, and get a wedding cake topper or their monograms.  Kroger also has a cake kit with a gold "Congratulations", doves, and wedding bells.

Whole Foods (there are two in the area) generally has a good flower selection.  They almost always have peonies if that's of interest to you.  You could just buy a bouquet, trim and tie them up and voila!, you have a bouquet.

Aveda is closed on Sundays, but I'd look into the Ulta salon.  I've heard good things, and their prices are pretty good.  There's also a 20% off coupon out right now that you can use for salon services as well.

I would definitely agree with using a grocery store for the cake!

Costco has layered cakes as well but I'm not sure if they custom make them.  The best thing to do is to call them.  But, oh my God, I had one of their cakes, a white cake as well as their red velvet cake and it was AMAZINGLY delicious.  I had Sam's club to and Costco was definitely better by a mile.  Just check out their website and give a call to the one that is closest to where you're having the event.

I can only suggest a cake place- Hiller's grocery store. They are a little expensive for a grocery store, but the cakes are awesome! You could also try Meijer or Kroger (both grocery stores).
I know of a great flower shop in Ann Arbor, but my mom owns it, so I don't think it would be right for me to suggest them. You could go to your local florist and see if they have any recommendations for a florist in Ann Arbor. They may have a preferred florist they work with in the area.
