How about Ann Arbor? Really you could find any type of backdrop you're looking for...cool downtown, old buildings (UM Law Qaud), gorgeous gardens (Botanical Gardens--believe you'd need to call in advance).

Ann Arbor & Kensington are both great suggestions. Ann Arbor is such a COOL town, with great shops, buildings, etc.
