Downtown Detroit Venue: I just want a beautiful, timeless space

Hi!  I recently got engaged and we are looking to show all our friends the timeless and unseen beauty of the city.  I am looking to rent a space downtown that is similar to the aesthetic of the Fox or Gem Theatre (gilded/vaulted ceilings, intricate paint work, central location), but I want to bring in my own catering, linens, decorations.  Does anyone have any suggestions?  Thank you in advance!

That's wonderful that you want to showcase the beauty that exists in Detroit.  You'll get a better response if you post this on the local board.  Look to the left, under local wedding boards.  The ladies on the Detroit board are great and very helpful.

    Enjoy your planning.
  • Welcome to the Detroit board and congrats on your engagement!

Look at the top of this board and there is a push pin with a permanent posting that lists all the venues, costs, and rating by the brides. This is a good starting point.

Off the top of my head I can't think of any venues as you described that allow for outside catering. The Masonic Temple (now owned by Ilitch Holdings) might.

We chose our venue fairly early in the process, so I didn't see any downtown. But the other brides might have some recommendations for you.

  • Were getting married at the Colony Club this June and it is BEAUTIFUL!!! Definitely a Detroit gem! They don't allow outside catering, but I've heard the food is good, we are doing our tasting this Friday. I think you could bring in anything else though. Check it out, I think it might be the look that you're thinking of...also same owners as the Gem :). Good luck!

  • As Meegles said, the Guardian building allows the mesanine (actually called the Rowland Cafe) and way up high like the 30 or 40th floor.  I have the contact info for it if you want, it's $5000 space rental for the highrise floor, the cafe has different management and never ever returned my numerous phone calls and emails, so Idk how much it is.

Also, Belle Isle Casino would be gorgeous and fit your needs if you weren't having a huge wedding.  You just have to be careful when you book because they have a long lead time and I've heard more than a couple horror stories about them cancelling events or double-booking.

  • The Detroit Institute of Arts also does weddings now in their Kresege Court. Beautiful.
  • I am getting married this August at the Detroit Yacht Club, and we absolutely adore it.  It's definitely timeless inside and very unique.  I don't believe you can bring your own catering- but their catering prices are actually very reasonable if money was what you were worried about. Hope this helps and goodluck!
