Cake and dessert table etiquette

I plan on having a dessert table at my summer 2013 wedding, and I need to know: if there are going to be several kinds of sweets on the table, do I need to make/have enough of each for everyone?  For example, if there's a traditional wedding cake as well as cake pops, and 100 guests, do I need enough slices of cake or individual cake pops for 100 people?  Or can I just assume they'll have a little of everything, or not even everything?

  • Assume everyone has a piece of cake. And yes, I'd assume everyone has at least one of each type of dessert. But your caterer may be able to assist you better.
  • I would actually disagree with Sue.

I think it would be a good idea to have a "main" dessert (lets say Cake for the sake of argument) and make sure there is enough of the Cake for everyone to have a serving, then for the "supplementary" desserts, lets say you're having 4 different kinds, I would personally make sure there is enough QTY overall for the supplementary desserts for at least 2 per person (so in general people would be able to sample 2 of the 4 desserts)

If you're just doing cake and cake pops though, I would question why you don't just stick to one single option and make sure there's enough for all your guests.

  • If you want cake and dessert table, I would make about 3 finger desserts and then your cake, too much sweets and you won't have anyone eating your cake?  I've seen it happen, but having a simple but good selection makes for very happy guests!!!  congratulations

I'm considering more than one dessert option because the cake I want is super expensive.  But I've got my heart set on this damned thing, and on a dessert table, as well.  So I have been thinking of other, smaller, less expensive things to add to the cake, in order for people to feel like they're getting everything they deserve.  Is deserve the right word?  I don't really care.  I just want that cake.

<div>If you want the specific cake just for you to cut, that's one thing. Don't get a cake that's just enough to serve only a small portion of your guests though - I would still find it acceptable to provide other desserts for all your guests if the cake was just a small one for you and your FI to cut & keep.</div>

  • We had cake and chocolate covered strawberries at our coffee bar & they didn't come out until after cake was served. We had 130 guests & I think we had 13 dozen strawberries???? My caterer told me to figured about 2 per person, but I felt that was too much. We definitely had some left over at the end of the night. You could always do chocolate covered pretzel rods, which are cheap and you can make them at home. I was also considered cheesecake lollipops and my venue also had smore kabobs, the pretzel rods, & macaroons. If you are already serving cake, I probably wouldn't do cake pops....thats just too much cake!

Those are great ideas!  I know, it might be a lot of cake, but my boyfriend is obsessed with the idea of cake pops, ever since the term came out of my mouth.  This is all my fault, really, since I want that damned cake so badly.

  • Is the cake made of gold? Why do you want it so much? I would agree with sue and get enough for everyone to have at least a taste of each. That could be as easy as cutting really small slices of each item, etc.
