Michigan-Detroit

Hello Detroit! :)

I'm a native Detroiter, but live in Milwaukee now where I will be getting married in December.  I thought it would be too hard to plan a wedding long distance, and I haven't lived in Detroit since high school.

Anyhoo, I'm coming home for Father's Day, and that's when my sisters, my mom and I will go shopping for the Mother-of-the-Bride dress.  Since I don't know ANYTHING about the bridal scene in the 'D,'  where are some middle-of-the-road places to shop?  Something for $500 or less for my dear mother?

Thank you ladies!!!!

Welcome Portia! I see you're getting married EXACTLY 6 months before me and my FI! Congrats.

I'm horrible about the Detroit scene.. and I have no idea where you should shop for your mom - I'm not that far in my planning yet.

I'm sure some of the other ladies have some ideas. I just wanted to say - HEY!!!!

    Macy's maybe?

My mom did most of her shopping at department stores...versus bridal stores.

I'm not sure where you are located...but 12 Oaks in Novi has Macy's, Nordstrom and Lord & Taylor.  And Laurel Park in Livonia has Von Maur and Parisian.  Lots of formal dresses at all these places.  We've found that some are closer to $500....but most are more like $200.

    Welcome to our board.

Depending on where your Mom is, I'd recommend Nordstrom's Rack on Big Beaver (the Rochester Rd exit from I-75), and across the street is Loehmann's. Both discount but some prices are still higher, especially at Nordstrom's Rack that carries designer duds.

From there you can go West on Big Beaver to Somerset Mall, in Troy. They have Nordstroms, Macy's, Sacks and tons of specialty stores like BC/BG, others.

The places mentioned above are fine too. If you are on the east side, try Alessandra's Bridal on Hoover north of 12 Mile. I got a sample dress there, and was looking at the MOB dresses. Lots of selection, different colors.

Good luck. Enjoy your trip "home".

So you ladies are saying go with the department stores?  My MOH said she wanted bridal shops.  I thought Somerset would be just fine.  I guess we'll try both.  Is there anything in Birmingham?

DetroitGyrl, thanks for the welcome mat!  I love being a winter bride, although I haven't really caught many breaks from my vendors. :)  I can't believe I'm walking down the aisle, 6 months from TOMORROW!!!  I'm so excited!  Here on The Knot, I hang out with the other December brides (many of them are 12-11-10 like me) but I'll have to stop by Detroit more often.  The Milwaukee board is D-E-A-D! LOL!

My mom found her dress at B Ella Bridal in Ann Arbor. You could also try Moni's in downtown Farmington. They have a great selection of dresses there. GL!

My mom looked at a ton of bridal stores all over Metro Detroit and didn't like anything she saw -- it was all too "matronly" for her.  After scowering mall after mall, and department store after department store, she ended up finding "the" dress a Cache at 12 Oaks.
