Sweet / Dessert Tables

After checking Yelp and calling a few bakeries, I figured I'd hit TK to ask who you ladies used (if so) for a sweet / dessert table.

After meeting with Sweet Dreams in West Bloomfield, I was really hooked on the idea so I wanted to see if I could beat the price anywhere else. I wanted a combination of fruit and baked goods and maybe even tortes.

Do you know anyone in the Oakland Country (or close by) area that you could recommend? We want a diverse sweet and dessert table to give our guests plenty of options in lieu of a wedding cake as we're cutting a small one for ourselves. I figure they'd prefer the variety instead.

So this is what I am doing as well, and my plan is to get the goodies from a specialty market, specifically Holiday Market in Canton. Their bakery is always packed with a variety of different sweets and I know they are all delicious (plus, between now and the wedding, I can try anything I want, I just have to pay for it). I also know that Whole Foods does some amazing dessert trays of varying sizes -- would you be comfortable hiring a market to do something like this? From the research I have done so far, they are generally cheaper than a bakery... Just my opinion! Good luck -- I'll be interested to see what you end up doing/others have done.

I am really interested in that, actually! Both those places have delicious goodies.

But, are you setting it up on your own? How does that work? What does the set up look like? Sweet Dreams just asks you to pay and they do it all for you but the price is what gets to me. I know they're expensive in general.

Did you want individual sweets (ie petit fours, eclairs) or tortes with a variety of fillings?

Costco has the best cakes and pies, much cheaper than any bakery. They have about 3-4 different types of cakes on a regular basis (ie round cakes, 3-4 layers), plus 2-3 pies. I think they sell large sheets of brownies with icing as well. Their tortes are about $16 I recall.

Two stores where I've seen great cakes for sale are Produce Palace on Dequindre, just North of 12 Mile in Warren, and Randazzo's Bakery. I think Joe's Produce in Livonia also has a pretty good selection. At these places I think the fancy cakes run $16-$30 each. Not sure about the pies.

I'm sure other ladies have additional recommendations,.

Try Sensational Sweets! You can find them on facebook. A few of my friends used them at their weddings and I'll hopefully be using them for mine!!

I just have to add that Holiday Market in Cantons baked stuff is BEAUTIFUL, FI and I walk past their bakery section every time we go in just to look at the stuff.

<div>My venue (Fox Hills in Plymouth) has a cake-cutting fee included in our package, and I am just going to have them set out the desserts instead of cut the cake (they are fine with that switch). I also will have my DOC ensure that everything is set up properly, if the Fox Hills staff falls through in any way. I double and triple checked with the venue to ensure that they would be ok with this plan, since there are so many rules about outside food, and I would suggest that you do the same, if this is the plan you go with. But I am excited about it and I think it will be a great alternative to plain 'ol cake.</div>

double check with your venue that you can have "sweets and desserts" brought in other than a cake. My venue only allowed cakes from outside vendors so instead of a table with a variety of pastries and such we had a cake table with 13 different flavor torte cakes and one small two layered traditional wedding cake. I bought small round cake stands ofr half of them from meijer and cheap knives for cutting each one. I didn't have the hall cut the cake, I just had knives and let our guests cut into whatever flavor they wanted. It was a huge hit and the table was mouthwatering to look at.

Sue mentioned Produce Palace.  My sister brought a bunch of their pastries to an event over the weekend.  Their mini desserts were really cute and she only paid a $1 per piece.

This may be a stretch to look at, but have you ever thought of looking at the local culinary schools? I work as a pastry chef now, but when I was in school, we had a number of people asking if they could purchase cakes and pastries for their events. The information is given to a teacher and they sometimes pass it on to a trusted student with permission from the client. I once taught a cupcake decorating class while I was in school. My teacher spoke to the lady and asked if they were okay with a student doing so and I took a friend along with me and taught the class. 

My prices were of course way underpriced,but I wanted the experience. I was of course being watched and guided by my instructor.

so, you dont plan to have enough cake for everyone, so is that why you want so many desserts?  I ask that only because a wedding I did, wanted the exact same thing, but then when it came to the cake, they took about 80% of it home. 

Just remember, odds always look better than evens and the way you set it up, decorate the table, will make it memorable and Pop!  Congrats!!!
