hypothetical question: would you purchase my wedding dishes, glasses, and silverware?

Hello!

I'm getting married in May and I'm doing some cost comparisons.  I'm considering purchasing all my dishes, glasses, and silverware, and then reselling it afterward.  I checked out the dollar store, and they actually have totally decent stuff!

SO, I'm not trying to find buyers now - just trying to guage interest: would you purchase my silverware, glasses, and dishes for your wedding?  For $1000, you would get 200 of the following: dinner plates, dessert plates, champagne glasses, water glasses, and  knife/fork/spoon sets.

Of course, you could resell it again yourself.

Thanks!

Not sure how many would consider rebuying, but I wouldn't.

Rental costs for many of the items you mention are less than $1. I paid for the rental because then I didn't have to worry about getting the stuff out of our venue, cleaned, and packed up before we had to leave. The caterers took care of it. The only things I supplied, and my caterer/day of coordinator had to pack up were some candle holders, table runners, and 80" black round toppers. And that was just for 9 tables. I even let the guests take my centerpieces and votives, and there were very few left for them to pack up for us. I couldn't be bothered, after storing them for the several months before the wedding.

I think that's a question you should ask yourself, and most brides would ask themselves as well. Who will clean, pack, carry, and transport (in boxes? crates?) all this stuff.

    But that's just me.

No. Especially since most venues it is included in the price and if you are doing outside catering, you can rent the stuff for cheaper. I would much rather put the $1000 towards something else.

I wouldn't pay that much to buy used dishes...I plan to get plastic dishes from smartyhadaparty.com that are "nice looking" disposable dishes.

No, I would not, because it's too much bother.
  • The trend is the mix-matched china and silverware of which my daughter and I are spending the next 5 months acquiring at yard sales, thrift stores and antique malls. We set a goal that we would not spend more than $1 each on plates, salad plates & tea cups. We will spend less than $600 for all the pieces. I do plan on re-selling them as well.
I'm getting IKEA glasses (200 for $50) and Sam's Club flatware for under $150. Between the bridal re-sale sites, ebay and craigslist, we shouldn't have a problem selling them. We may not make as much as we paid but any return goes back into my wallet.
  • Thanks for your responses!

I've been able to start accumulating everything I need for less than $1 each -- which is what one would pay at a dollar store.  I'm confident that we will be able to sell them, as many of the craigslist vendors tell me they get a really good buyer response.

allyansenW, thanks for the Ikea idea!  Also, when is your wedding? Maybe we could buy each other's stuff?  Mine is May 12.

    Good luck!
