Michigan-Detroit

Farm/Rustic OR poolside

So...My fiance is from the Detroit area, he lives in NYC and I just moved to L.A. I'm not familiar with the Detroit area AT ALL and it looks like this is where we'll be planning our wedding. I'm looking for either farm/barn/rustic venues or poolside/cabana-ish settings - neither of which his mother likes so I need some insight on possibilities from those of you in the area!

Re: Farm/Rustic OR poolside

  • I think you'll probably have better luck with the farm/barn/rustic venues.

That being said, I know very little about those types of venues, but lots of girls around here do so hopefully they can help ya out.

Good luck! Michigan is lovely :)

  • Hello,
I am not very sure of your wedding guest size but try Cobblestone Farms in Ann Arbor or Greenmead in Livonia will give you a beautiful rustic look

  • I vote rustic look because while the poolside cabana sounds AWESOME, Michigan can easily ruin it, haha. And like PP said, there are more options with finding a barn/farm.

Agreed.  In this area it will be much easier to go with the rustic look.

  • It will be much easier at a barn because of MI weather, but if you still want to consider poolside, check out Cranbrook house and gardens.  It's easily one of the most beautiful outdoor venues in SE Michigan.

I wanted to have my wedding there but because of price and Michigan's unpredictable weather, we decided on a more formal indoor venue.  Anyways, if I could guarantee beautiful weather, that would be my place of choice- it is STUNNING!  Besides this venue, most other outdoor ones in Michigan are lacking so I would agree with the other girls the barn setting would be a better alternative.  On the main cranbrook site you don't see really any good photos, so here are some past weddings that have been done there!

The only downside to this venue is you have to use their vendors (who I am sure are all great) but that does leave you with less options on food/photography, etc.  On the other hand, if you are planning so far away perhaps it'd be a blessing in disguise that you don't have to do so much research!   : )

Sorry its so long but I am also planning my wedding from out of the country, which is hard but at least I am FROM the Detroit area... so I completely understand how overwhelming this is for you.  If you have any other questions just ask!!
  • In addition to the venues that have already been suggested, here are some more:

Misty Farm in Ann Arbor: they book up fast, so depending on your date, they may or may not still be available

Millcreek Barn or Blue Dress Barn in southwest Michigan: this may be too far, but might be worth checking out

Circa 1843 Events in Almont: not a barn, but a historic mill with a rustic look and feel.

Wilson Barn in Livonia: no alcohol is permitted

Other potentially rustic-feeling venues are Waldenwoods in Hartland, Wellers in Saline, and Sharon Mills in Sharon Township.

    Good luck!
  • Thanks all! I learned more here than I did in hours of google searching:)
