Save the dates...yay or nay?

We're getting married next summer. It's going to be small (60 ppl max) in the backyard of our house. It's going to be very casual and laid back with a pig roast and bbq for dinner.
We found a backyard bbq invite that we want to use for save the dates. They are pretty inexpensive and fun. We also found our wedding invite. It's on the more expensive side, but it really fits us and the feel that we're going for.

Are save the dates necessary? FI wants them. I really like them, but I'm concerned about the added cost. Though it's not a lot, it's still dipping into the budget.

any thoughts??

if most of your family/friends are in town i would say skip them.  We did them b/c most guest for our wedding are oot, so we wanted to give them more then the 6-8 week notice to make travel plans.

Agreed. Totally not needed unless you have a lot of out of towners. Plus your guest list might change by the time you send out invites.
