Tell Us Tuesday

What was the last book you read?  Did you like it?  What was the best book you've read recently?

Re: Tell Us Tuesday

  • I love book questions!

I finished "The Book Thief" by Zusak last week. It was REALLY good.  It's about a young girl living with foster parents in Nazi Germany. It's narrated by Death..just really well-written and a good mix of depressing and uplifting.

I'm now trying to read "Prodigal Summer" by Barbara Kingsolver. I tried to get through this 6 years ago and it didn't work. I think if I can get passed the 3rd chapter I'll be good but for whatever reason I can't get into it. I don't not like it, and I really liked one of her other books (Poisonwood Bible) but whatever. FI will be gone this weekend so maybe I will get some quality read-time in.

  • I re-read Hunger Games yesterday to prepare for the movie (even though I just read it like a month ago.)  It was so good and definitely the best book I've read recently.

I am currently trying to read the second book in a series and I just can't get into it.  I didn't like the first book but I was trying to give it a second chance.  It's not looking good.
  • I haven't read much lately but I really want to read Fifty Shades of Gray.

  • I'm currently reading The Art of Fielding, by Chad Harbach, which I really love. The book I read before that was a real loser and I'm trying to think what else there's been. I also recently read The Paris Wife, which I loved as well. It's so hard for me to pick a "best" book.

I do know that I need to get some books together and load of my Nook for the honeymoon!

  • The only books I have read since the Twilight series have been school books.  I really love Pride and Prejudice.  On a daily basis I read at least 3 children's books to my students :)  They also read to me.  I have a list of books I would love to read when the wedding is over and I am on summer break.  Not to sure how much I will get read on the honeymoon.

  • Cutting for Stone!!!  It's so weird, I tried to read it twice and couldn't get into it...then I tried again the other day and I'm ADDICTED!!  Check out the ratings on Amazon, it's incredible.  I find myself looking at the clock at work just wanting to go home so I can read some more!!  Not sure what my problem was in the beginning, but now I'm so into it :)

Other great books I've read lately:

    Hunger Games
The new Stephen King (11/22/63 I think?)

50 Shades of Gray is up next!

I did Cutting for Stone a few months ago. The first 2/3 of the book were a slog and then, like you, I couldn't put it down.  Great story.

What is this 50 Shades of Gray you guys keep talking about?!

  • Man, I haven't read nearly enough books lately! The last book I read (in 2011!!!!!) was "The Court of the Air" which I found at a big lots for $3 so I picked it up. It was....okay. I wasn't super impressed by it.

I would say the best book recently is the one I'm reading right now "Kavalier and Clay" - I actually can't wait to finish it! I just never seem to have the time to dedicate to reading lately.

  • I am currently reading " Love the One You're With" by Emily Giffin. I am a sucker for books like this one! She also wrote "Something Borrowed." I haven't had too much free time to really get into it, but so far I love it. I am tempted to jump on the "The Hunger Games" train soon as well. FI wants to see the movie and I'd like to read the book before we do.

  • I'm working my way back through the Harry Potter books - on the 6th one now.  I'm really enjoying them.  Back in January I looked at my reading journal and realized that I hadn't read a single book for the 7 months prior to our wedding.  So now I'm being fairly gluttonous about my reading to make up for it.

I'm also reading Fool Me Twice, which is NF about how America is becoming increasingly anti-science.  I'm finding it really interesting.

  • Just finished The Raising by Laura Kasischke and now debating starting the Dark Tower (S. King) series over again. I haven't touched them since they released the last book and I read it in 3 days, I think it'd be nice to start again and read them in order.

The only books I have time to read these days are textbooks. Human Anatomy is just so addicting! lol

Clearly, we'd be BFFs because I have a Reading Journal too, complete with questions about your favorite characters, quotes, etc. Most people think I'm crazy, but really it just helps me remember what actually happened in any given book -- I'm terrible about remembering the plot points and endings of books once I've finished them.

  • The last book I read was Game of Thrones which I loved. I am currently reading the second book of that series A Clash of Kings which is pretty good so far but a lot slower going due to a lot of battle scenes. My goal is to finish it by April 1st when the 2nd season starts on HBO. I am looking forward to finishing it and taking a break from the series to catch up on the books I keep downloading to my Kindles.

Yay for keeping track of crap!  :D  To be fair, mine just has title, author, and the date I finished the book on, but I find that it helps me notice (a) how often I am reading, (b) if I have read nothing but romance novels for the last six months and should maybe read something of substance, and (c) - this is the embarrassing one - if I have already read the book I've just picked up.  I own a bazillion books, and have a tremendously bad memory for fiction.  Even if I love a book, three days later I usually can't tell you the main character's name.  :/

  • Melissa - I'm the same way.  I have a terrible memory for whether I've read a book or not.  I have this long list of books and any time I read something by a new author I add all their other books so I can find others that I might enjoy.

But I also add them all to goodreads.com when I'm finished.  Nothing better than adding a book after you've finished :)  It's like getting to check something off a to do list!

I haven't read a non-sciencey thing in a while.  A few months ago I read The Help and I thought it was pretty good.

I really want to read the Hunger Games though.

  • Mel, I'm the same way with forgetting the salient details. I agree, Liz, Goodreads is a great tool too!
