Early wedding gifts

I know the general rule is that when you get an early wedding gift, you go ahead and send a thank you card right away.

But yesterday I got a card addressed to "Mr. and Mrs. FI's last name."  These people were invited to the wedding (they can't make it), so they know we're not married yet.  Does addressing the card this way indicate that I'm not supposed to open it until we're married?  Or should I go ahead and open it now, cash the check if there's one inside, and send a thank you note pre-wedding?
