Lent

Does anyone give up anything?

I'm not feeling great about my choice....Fast Food. I actually don't eat it that often. I usually give up pop or chocolate. However, i really haven't been drinking hardly any pop and how can I give up chocolate with my birthday and cake tasting falling under lent? For half a second I thought about alcohol but then realized the last week of lent I will be in Vegas.

Re: Lent

  • I don't really give anything up. Though, I'm sort of thinking about trying to cut down on sweets, mostly those that are offered in my office. It's something I keep saying I'll do, and then the next morning there are cookies on the counter and I just can't help myself.

We'll see if the power of Lent has any influence.

The exciting thing for me about this Lent is that the weekend after is our wedding, so it feels particularly reflective this year.

  • I don't practice it and not sure if FI does....
  • I'm giving up meat. And limiting my FB use to Sundays only.

  • I don't practice but DH is giving up pop, swearing, and he's going to actively work on being a better husband.  Not that he's not great, "but I can always be better" he says  Which is really sweet but now I feel guilty and feel like I should be participating as well.

So I guess mine is trying to be a better wife.
  • I don't participate, but maybe I should...I really need to kick my pop habit and start drinking more water.

  • I am not Catholic, but my FI was confirmed, even though we go to a non-demonational church...but we are both giving up Fast Food and Cursing! Should be an interesting 40 days :)
  • I gave up pop 8 years ago for lent... and I still don't drink it. It was a nice way to cut it out of my diet, and it was surprisingly very easy. The ONLY time I do is if it's in mixed drinks I have when I'm at the bar, which isn't very often.

So usually, I give it up completely during lent. If I'm at the bar, I don't get ANYTHING that has pop in it. Sometimes I feel like I'm half-a$$ing it, but I don't eat meat on Fridays during lent, and that's struggle enough for me lol.

  • I'm giving up Facebook (ahh!) and watching TV before 8pm every day. Mostly because I get home from work or school around 4:30/5:00 everyday with a million plans of things to get done and I sit down in front of the tv and play on Facebook all night. So hopefully I will be really motivated during Lent and get caught up on all my homework!

FI is giving up swearing. I've been on the phone with him while I'm writing this and he has already slipped up twice!

No Tv before 8pm is a great one. I do the same get home and sit down and get nothing done. Then I get mad at myself.

  • I am giving up ice cream and FI is going to give up pop I think. We also do meatless Fridays as well.

  • If you are a practicing Catholic, you should be reflective during lent.  It's not so much about "giving something up" as it is about sacrificing.  So if taking something on is a greater sacrifice than giving something up...you may be better off.

As a practicing Catholic, I'm fasting today, no meat on Fridays and am focused on almsgiving.  I will also be making a commitment to get to the gym 6 days a week instead of 4...and am considering giving up some television.  I too have given up materialistic items in the passed, like soda and fast food - and it is incredible how you really don't ever go back to it!  So if you're not a practicing Catholic - but you are looking to better yourself; read up on Lent and it's meaning...and see what it can do for you.

St. Patrick's Day is a Holy day and the Pope typically pardons Catholics from whatever they have given up/taken on for that day.  This way we Micks can still give up grape or grain and not go to Hell :)
