Unique Reception Venue - Please HELP

This might be a tall order, but I need some major help finding a reception venue.  My fiance and I want to throw an un-weddingy wedding, so traditional banquet halls and golf courses are not our cup of tea.  We are also getting a later than average start since we want to get married at the end of the year in November/December. I called T-Plex/Piquette Plant today and unfortunately they are booked all year and they are exactly what we are looking for:  unique, provide tables/chairs, and allow offsite catering.  Does anyone in the southeast Michigan are know of any venues that fit this bill?  It's starting to seem impossible.  Any suggestions are greatly, greatly appreciated.  I'm going insane.

  • Detroit Zoo for sure!

  • I love theaters- The Fillmore allows outside catering, the Gem and Century, or Royal Oak Music Theater.

I personally love the T-plex, it's too bad it's booked for the date you wanted. Could you maybe move your date?

Depending on your guest count and budget, here are a few options:
Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit, Detroit
Ann Arbor Art Center, Ann Arbor
UofM Museum of Art, Ann Arbor
    Crofoot Ballroom, Pontiac
    Flat 151, Detroit

These venues don't offer off-site catering but have really delicious, not your typical wedding reception food and unique interiors:
    Cliff Bell's, Detroit
    Vinology Bubble Room, Ann Arbor
Zingerman's Events on Fourth, Ann Arbor

And if you're not adverse to Toledo, the Glass Pavilion at the Toledo Museum of Art is completely unique, although they don't offer off-site catering.

  • Just thought of one more, the Russell Industrial Center in Detroit.
  • WOW, everyone, thank you so much for your speedy, informative replies.  You are amazing!

I don't know how I managed not to include budget information, but I somehow neglected to include any:  we are trying to do this on a small budget.  My future in-laws are giving us a big chunk of our budget and I'm making up the rest of it, so we hope to do this under $10,000.  We discussed changing the date in order to hold it at the Piquette Plant, but now my future sister in law is getting married next year and we just want to get it over with.  I'm a little older than the average bride and we want to have kids asap and figure we might as well get married before now that we're engaged.  I feel like this search is the equivalent of hunting for unicorns.
  • Planterra is gorgeous, but WAY out of your budget (I wanted it on the same budget as you lol) but I found a greenhouse (Goldner Walsh) in Pontiac that is working just as well.  I have to rent my own tables, but otherwise it's the same as T-Plex with everything else being DIY.  They'll also let you use ALL of their plants, so decor isn't a huge issue.  They're booked Sept 29th (us) but they have a pretty open schedule.

There's also a studio in Warren that is like a blank canvas and allows for all outside catering and booze.  They shoot commercials and things there.  We really liked it, but ultimately went for the greendhouse because we wanted a more organic feel.

  • I know you want different, and my venue is different but not like the T-plex. Check my bio below.........if you are having more than 100 people it won't work, but Greenmead Village in Livonia, at the intersection of 8 Mile & Newburgh is great. But it's more "vintage-y", not modern. They have a chapel as well, and an old home turned into a banquet venue. Top attendance at either though is 100.
  • Detroit Yacht Club. We are getting married there in August. We love its unique feel and the price is very reasonable.
  • My very good friend got married at Planterra this fall and it was AMAZING!!!!

The space is one of a kind.   My fiance fell in love with the Conservatory that evening.  If we had not already booked our May wedding we absoutley would have booked there.
