Save the dates...yay or nay?

We're getting married next summer. It's going to be small (60 ppl max) in the backyard of our house. It's going to be very casual and laid back with a pig roast and bbq for dinner.
We found a backyard bbq invite that we want to use for save the dates. They are pretty inexpensive and fun. We also found our wedding invite. It's on the more expensive side, but it really fits us and the feel that we're going for.

Are save the dates necessary? FI wants them. I really like them, but I'm concerned about the added cost. Though it's not a lot, it's still dipping into the budget.

any thoughts??

I like them and think they are a super cute way to get the word about your wedding, set the tone for it, and give people time to make arrangements.  That being said, they are not a "must do"  it is completely up to you!  I sent them because we are getting married on a holiday weekend and we have quite a few out of town guests, but like i said you definately don't have to send them! But if you do post them so we can see! We love pictures!
