Band and DJ???

I also posted this on my wedding month board, but seeing as how many of you have already had your wedding or are further along in planning, you might be able to help me out more.

Hubby has told me he would like the idea of having a salsa band at our wedding.  My cousin is a vocalist and plays for one that is going to perform at the Detroit Salsa Awards soon.  Anyhoo, he is supposed to call me back within the next few days with a price.  IF we can afford it, we'd like to have both band and DJ.  Not everyone is comfortable dancing to salsa, and I want everyone to dance.  

Here's my two questions: 1. Are you having a band, DJ, or both?

2. Hypothetically, if you were going to do both, how would you work it out?

I put alternate every few songs.  Most bands like to have a break and at the weddings I've been to that have had a band, when they took a break they would just play cds.

I went to a wedding where there was a DJ and a band that played traditional Chaldean music. It was a blast! They alternated periodically throughout the evening. Talk to the band and the dj and see what they recommend. I say do both if they are in the budget.

I think i'd prefer band first. i think the music would go nicely and be a little romantic during dinner, etc. i'm not sure of your crowd, but i'd think *younger* people would stay longer and party so a DJ may be better to stay later as they could play a wide variety of music.
