When should we register?

Our shower is March 10ths. I think my FMIL is sending the invites 5 weeks before. I was thinking of registering the first weekend in January. Is that to soon?

I would register shortly into January.  Anytime now would be fine, but with the holidays and things going on clearance I would recommend waiting until after the first of the year.

Agreed - wait until mid-January. Registering takes longer than you'd think and it'll take even longer if you're there during the post-holiday mess. Not sure where you're registering, but Crate and Barrel hosted these fun events for wedding registries where the store opened before normal hours and they had champagne and snacks.

We have already started to register as we've been thinking of things we'd like and our shower isn't until April.  It takes a lot longer than you think to try to find the best deal and the exact items you'd like, so its best to start early.  Be sure to leave your self time to look at things in person too if necessary.  I would wait until after the holiday bustle and then start on it (remember the pricing now and right after Christmas will probably change before March!)

I'm getting married in April and registered back in July. I was just too excited to do it, and it did take awhile. Also, my family has been using it as Christmas present ideas as well, so that's nice,

I agree with Ally that now might not be the best time due to the holidays, but I'd do it as soon as you can in January. Then you have time to refine things -- I've found that I've done a lot of adding/deleting the last few months.
