Eastern Market for flowers?

I've heard that you can find beautiful flowers for sale at Detroit's Eastern Market during the summer months. Our wedding is this July in metro Detroit and I'm considering buying some wedding flowers here! Has anyone done this before? Any advice on good vendors, prices, or varieties available? Or the best way to go about doing this? Thanks! Smile

Re: Eastern Market for flowers?

  • Not sure what your flower budget is, but if I were you, I'd be a bit leery of waiting until a few months before the wedding to see what is offered. Plus, whatever is offered in the beginning of the spring won't be the same as July.

It's my understanding (and I may be wrong) that many of the flowers sold at Eastern Market are plants to be placed in the ground to be grown in home gardens. If not, any flowers you buy there will be seasonal to Michigan in the months they are sold, which limits them to whatever can be grown locally.

See my post below in the "Is my floral budget even possible". Costco sells lovely flowers in their kiosks every day, 2 dozen roses are $17, various other types of flowers and bouquets as well for the same price, if you simply want to pick some up, regardless of type, and arrange them yourself. But they also have bulk flowers for ordering.

If you are not fussy at all about the types or colors of flowers you are using, you can check into Westborn Market in Royal Oak (they have other locations too, just not sure where), Thrifty Flowers also. There is Produce Palace in Warren on Dequindre just north of 12 Mile, they have a fairly large floral department and their flowers are very reasonable.

    Good luck.

EM does have cut flowers, there is one vendor in particular I'm thinking about, but I couldn't tell you which shed they are in (the one with the information booth in it). I'm sure if you go down there in the next couple months and talk to the vendors, they can tell you what will be available and give you an idea if it is feasible. Although from my experience it's not a lot cheaper than the local florist -- but worth a shot! Maybe you can work out a deal!
