Hi! Looking for creative/unique local ceremony/reception sites

Hello,
I am newly engaged and having trouble finding a ceremony or reception site that feels like "the one." I live in the Detroit area and we are trying to stay fairly local due to an ill family member who would have trouble traveling too far. An outdoor ceremony appeals to me, however I am open to both indoor and outdoor. We are planning on having an August 2013 wedding. Any input you could offer would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Welcome DABarry and congrats on your wedding!

It would help to know a bit more about your wedding so our suggestions can be considered. What size guest list are you anticipating? What is your budget? Any particular area of the metro area, ie downtown, east side, west side?

There is a post above with a yellow push pin with vendors/costs, etc. Mostly everyone who has been married, or planning one, puts info there. Yes, it takes a long time to read, but you can write down ideas as you go.

    Happy planning!

Welcome to the board, and congratulations!

I ditto everything that Sue said, and I would also add that it might be helpful if you could give us some idea of the style you're going for or your interests.  When you siad "creative/unique," my brain immediately listed "Cobblestone Farm, DIA, Detroit/Toledo Zoo, Gem Theater, Greenfield Village...."  but those are all very different venues that will offer very different atmospheres.

Check out the Grosse Pointe War Memorial or Colony Club.  Those were the most unique ones I came across.  Very different and elegant at the same time!

Thanks everyone! We are still very much in the preplanning stage, however we are looking at a guest list of probably 50-75. Ideally we would like to stay under 15,000 total. Aside from being local, I don't have any particular area in mind. An outdoor ceremony with an indoor reception appeals to me. We are both open to having a non-traditional wedding, and neither of us have a strong religious affiliation. I was actually really interested in the DIA, only to find that they no longer host weddings :(

Tplex.org. Two floors, tables and chairs, plus you can bring in outside everything! Very inexpensive.

I recommend the Scarab Club in Detroit!  It's actually right behind the DIA on Farnsworth.  It's a historic art club that dates back to 1907, and they have been in the same buiding since 1928.  It is beautiful and really unique!  It totally fits in with your guest count and budget too.  The second floor is so beautiful with a fire place and dark wood... the furniture is original and the beams are signed by all of the artists that have visited the club.  The main floor is a working art gallery and they have a really charming garden.

I'm getting married there in October!!!
