Dj vs. Band...Do you know any funk bands?

Hello all Michigan wedding women!

I'm having a debate right now with my fiance. We've checked out a couple bands and he didn't like either of them. I think DJ's are more cheesy. Based on past experiences and other advise!....Which is better? A live band or a DJ?

If you choose live band, do you have any suggestion for awesome motown/funk/jazz bands? Thanks!

First of all, welcome! Tell us more about yourself and your wedding!

I wouldn't say that all DJ are cheesy. I've been to quite a few weddings where the DJs were great. I've only been to one wedding with a band. I think it comes down to preference.

There was a great jazz band at a charity function I was at last month, Serious Jack (http://seriousjack.net/).

I highly recommend the band we booked- Rare Blend. We saw them at an event and booked them right after. They have been GREAT to work with and came highly recommended by a few older knotties as well as a few venues I've spoken with.

Oh and to answer your first question, it does often come down to a preference but I think a lot of times finances make the final decision. I have to say, though, that I have only been to one wedding with recorded music where I really had a good time (the bridal party played dj with an ipod) and I have had a pretty decent to awesome time at every wedding with a band....

What area are you having your reception in?  We had great luck finding an affordable jazz/motown band by contacting the University of Michigan School of Music.  If you're not in the Ann Arbor/Detroit area, you could try contacting another local university's music department.  Of course, this is a little risky since you're hiring students, not professionals.  But our group has experience playing weddings and they got great recommendations from everyone we talked to.  Plus we get live music for less than a lot of DJ's, so I think it's worth the risk!  If you want more info about who we talked to, just PM me - I'll have to get it from my FI since he was in charge of that. :)
