Unique Reception Ideas?

Hello. My fiance and I were originally going to have our wedding next June, but we just decided to move it up to this summer. Problem is I am having a little trouble coming up with a recepition venue. We are looking at about 70-90 guests. The biggest problem is that because this is a second wedding for both of us (I am a widow and FI is divorced) I am really wanting a unique venue, no banquet halls and preferrably one with a ceremony site although thats not as big of a deal. I am having a hard time finding unique reception ideas that are somewhat affordable. We are near the Ann Arbor area but I am willing to check out anywhere in southeast michigan really. Any metro Detroit brides have any ideas or been to a cool wedding venue? Any ideas would be great.

Re: Unique Reception Ideas?

  • It was my first wedding, my husband's third, when we were married last August. Our venue, Greenmead Village at the intersection of 8 Mile Rd & Newburgh Rds in Livonia served us well. It's just east of the I-275 exit at 8 Mile. Probably about 30 minutes from Ann Arbor.

It's a "mini Greenfield Village" with historic buildings, a non-denominational chapel and a banquet room inside an old historic home. It has lovely grounds where all of our pictures (including the one below) were taken.

You bring in your own food & alcohol. I think rental of both the chapel and banquet room are about $1000, but you'd have to check on current rates, we contracted for it in 2010. It's popular, but not so popular that it would be booked all summer

Everyone I communicated with at the venue was wonderful. This is a city owned park, they are city employees, but we had a wonderful experience.

If you click on my bio link below, there is a link in our website for vendors, all the places we contracted with. If you want more info about all the vendors we interviewed, just send me a private message.
  • Cobblestone Farm and Misty Farm, both in Ann Arbor...I would have loved to book either place but I have a huge guest list! Good Luck!
  • Detroit Player's Theater.  It's a really unique space. You can use the stage for the ceremony and they have cabaret style tables.  Max. capacity is 120.

Also in Detroit, the Dossin Great Lakes Museum on Belle Isle.  Very unique with great views of the city.
  • Thank you! I will certainly check into all of these options. I am also meeting with a wedding planner this weeken and hopefully she will help us sort all of this out :)

  • The Detroit Historical Society looked really cool

  • Greenfield Village, the Henry Ford, and the Masonic Temple would be excellent and unique sites!
