Need help finding a Catholic Church

I am catholic and new to the metro detroit area, therefore i am not a registered member at a churchi in this area. I do not want to go home and get married in my home church. Does anyone have any suggestions on catholic churchs in the metro detroit area ( i live in royal oak) that one does not have to be a member in order to be married in? Any suggestions would be very helpful, thanks!

  • I am not 100% sure, but there is orchard lake st marys, which is beautiful. Also, we are getting married at the Inn at St. John's, which is a full service venue and they have a catholic chapel on site. They did not require any membership with them at all.

  •  I got married at Academy of the Sacred Heart Chapel in Bloomfield Hills (our rehearsal dinenr was in Royal oak, so it's close).  It is a GORGEOUS church and you don't need to be a member.  It was a little on the pricey side (about $1000) but I had the same problem you did - H and I lve in Seattle and we had a really hard time finding a Catholic church to marry us.
  • Most all churches in the area would require you be a parishioner for a certain period of time before even booking your ceremony with them.  My best recommendation would be to speak with your Parish from wherever you are living (out of state I presume) and see what they suggest locally.  If they can vouch that you are a participating parishioner, often times you can get passed a bit of the red tape that might come with getting accepted to a parish that has stringent rules on new (and engaged) parishioners simply seeking a place to get married.
    Good luck!
  • When I lived in Royal Oak, I attended St. Mary's on Lafayette. It's a lovely church. I have no idea what their membership requirements are for marriage, but I'd check into it.

Also, to Mrs. G's comment -- not every church requires membership. Mine doesn't require it, for example. However, if you are set on getting married in the church, I would suggest finding one you like and joining it now just to make the process a bit easier. Also, being a member makes the church and marriage ceremony a bit more personal if you actually know the priest and are familiar with the church as opposed to just picking it because of the location or because it's pretty.

  • Hi! This is my first post on theknot! My fianc and I don't belong to a church neither. I talked to the lady at St. Mary's parish office in Royal Oak and was told that I needed to be a registered parishioner for at least 2 months before I can even see if there's a date available. I would like to join a church but if I can't get marry in it because my reception date and ceremony date doesn't match up, it will be a bummer. Most venues in Detroit area book up fast and I can't wait 2 months. Oh well...
  • Most blessed cathedral $1250.00. Do your classes as your preferred church. Have to be baptized
