Going to Look at Venues!

Just have to say wheeeeee! We're going to Detroit to look at two venues tomorrow: DYC and The Gem. For now, The Gem is our top choice. It's our first actual go and meet somebody to talk about our wedding planning day. SO. EXCITED. Have a good weekend, everyone!

  • We looked at both, too! The Gem is lovely, we decided against it because we would've had to use the main theatre area and the Century Grille (room attached to the theatre) and we didn't like how it divided up. I also wasn't a fan of how low the balcony hangs over the main floor of the theatre. Felt kind of cramped.

We were married at the DYC, so I'm VERY partial to that venue. The ballroom is amazing, they have a great outdoor space, and awesome views. We received a ton of compliments on the venue and food.

  • Woohoo!!  Such a fun time.  Enjoy it!
  • Thanks everyone! Yeah, the Gem was a huge disappointment. I had no idea how small the space was and cramming my guests into two rooms is just not an option. The lady we met with (Nicole) also kind of just rubbed all of us the wrong way. Like she was doing us some big favor by letting us have the wedding there. We went and looked at Colony Club with her as well, and though it was beautiful, my FI said it's just not really us. Which is true. Plus, there's the whole issue of where we would have the ceremony if we went there. They have zero Saturday availability until November 2013, which knocks out an outdoor wedding. Their ceremony space was just half of the ballroom and just...not worth it, for us.

We did really like the DYC. Definitely an option. We went over to the conservatory to see the space, and since it was Friday during business hours, we were able to go into the white house and talk to the folks that run that. They were all very nice and accomodating in person.

But! Saturday morning, we went to Addison Oaks. First off, I just love the drive up there. I grew up in Rochester, so it's really just home to me, more so than Detroit ever will be. We drove down the willow-lined drive, and I started to fall in love. We pulled up, and my parents were there waiting for us, and my mother was already crying her eyes out. We saw the ceremony space first, which is BEAUTIFUL, and then the manager took us around and showed us the space. I really like that it's an old home (the Buell summer home), and now it's part of a county park. My parents have both been to weddings there before and have really enjoyed everything. It's probably not as 'unique' as we were looking for...but it's us.

We haven't made a decision yet - will still probably look at a few more places - just in case! - and then next weekend we'll be taking FI's parents there to see. I guess it just goes to show sometimes you really have to see for yourself! I never expected to fall in love with Addison Oaks, but it seems so right.
