Did you like your first make-up trial?

Did you your make-up turn out ok the first time, or did you go back again?  I had two make-up trials this past weekend by two different artists with two very different results.  I am a plain jane and don't wear much make-up, so its tough for me to know what I like and don't like although I did find some examples to provide the artists.  One was really simple, but almost too simple, and the other was almost too much!   One charged and the other one did a free trial, so I feel I could go back to her and ask for another opportunity.

Just wondering if this is normal!

Thanks!

  • My story dates back to the engagement pictures.  I too am a plane Jane and only wear makeup to special events and even then it is just mascara and lipstick.  On the day of our engagement pictures the lady that was supposed to do my hair and makeup canceled.  I was lucky to find another lady with 2 hours before the shoot.  She did an amazing job that she will be doing the whole wedding party and mine for the big day.  So I only had one trial and will not be doing a trial for the wedding since she did such a great job for the engagement shoot.  She is going to do a free hair trial though before the wedding.  She considers it part of the package.

  • I would recommend getting your makeup done one more time at sephora to try out an in between (not too much and not too little) bc it's free if you make a purchase in the store. I would then take a picture (hopefully you got pics of the last two) and it's like hair, you can show the person what you want or dont want. The nice thing about makeup is even on the day of the wedding, it's a lot easier to fix if you arent happy with it...out of the two girls you used, go with the one you felt was better at her job or that you were more comfortable with and then tell them what you would have changed with the makeup they did for you trial....

  • I liked my trial more than I actually liked my day-of. Like you, I don't wear much make up normally so.... yeah.

  • I never wear make-up. I had one trial, and was fine with it. The only thing she didn't do was false eyelashes, we talked about it and that's the one thing she added for the day of that I didn't "see" in my trial.

Even though I don't wear make-up, I wasn't really picky about how I looked, so I never even thought of testing out a few different people. Also, I knew that I'd be going to my salon for hair AND make-up, and only one girl does make-up there, so the decision was made.

My make-up turned out great. I definitely looked made-up (it didn't look completely natural), but this is good for pictures. Helps capture the details of your face.

  • Like you, I am a light makeup wearer.  I hated my trials, and I had three!  The first was for engagement pics.  When she was done and I looked in the mirror I almost passed out.  She made me feel older.  The pics turned out ok but some of the close-ups looked way too makeup heavy for me.

Then I had another freebee trial, kind of a "just for fun" session with another girl at that salon.  She's kind of new to it, and I could tell.  It was just sloppy.

Third was a different salon for my bridal shower.  I liked it a bit better but everyone agreed that my eyes were still too dark (everyone wants to darken my eyes).

So I'm taking some advice I found here and going to Sephora this weekend to learn how to do my face how I want it Smile

    Amy,

If you are heading to the sephora at somerset, I would recommend asking for either Kathleen (love her but she is one of the instructors so she doesnt do makeup outside of the store) or Emily Cook (she actually did my wedding makeup). Goodluck!

    I will...thank you!!
  • I don't think I trust anyone else to do my makeup. I wear eye makeup every day, so I know what I like for my eyes, and the rest of the stuff I plan to learn from Sephora. I'd rather buy the makeup, learn how to use it and get multiple uses out of it than pay someone an exorbitant amount of money for a single day and that's it.

  • my first trial was a nightmare, but when i found an artist that was very talented, it was smooth sailing ! i highly recommend Mijo-a Beauty Studio in Rochester.
