DJ woes!!!

Ok, so I know I've already posted something on this topic, but my FI and I are having such a difficult time with this decision!!  We have all our big vednors booked already except a DJ.  I've asked so many people for suggestions and no one has given us a recommendation of the same person.  I feel this could be our most imporatant vendor, which I think is why we are having such a hard time with it.  Any advice???  I would really appreciate it!!

Re: DJ woes!!!

  • There are so many DJs out there! In the wedding package I am getting one was picked for me and they are a preferred vendor of many venues.  Mine is doubletroubledjs.com. They service all of Mi and parts of OH. I have met them in person and all the contact I have had with them has been fast, nice and professional.  Good luck!

  • We are going with Mike Staff Productions, they were recommended by our wedding planner and so far everything has been great.

I went to HS with these guys, they are super fun and awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • We are using Sunshine entertainment (Paul Taylor) He was recommended in the stickeys on here and we met him at a Wedding show. Nice guy and really seems to know what he is doing. You kinda just have to go with your gut on this one.

  • There are tons of DJs.  I talked with I don't even know how many.  For us price, sound, and personality was the key elements that we were looking for.  We knew DJs were expensive but some are just outrageous for what they sound like.  We also didn't want a DJ that was super cheesy or wanted to be on the microphone all night talking.  I'd HIGHLY recommend The Music Butler.  Mike owns the company and is the head DJ/MC.  He's great in action as I've seen him at other weddings and I really like and feel confident about the interactions/meetings we've had.

  • Its hard to take recommendations from strangers bc you don't know their taste but I would ask the people you know, ones that have got married more recently or have been to wedding with good dj's and track them down. My DJ is the only real vendor I used from a referral and it was one of the best wedding decisions I made. I used Ron Johnson from night and day productions. Natalie is the owner and I would recommend calling her. She has been in the DJ biz for like 20-30 years and she knows everyone in the industry. She actually gave me other recommended dj's to talk to so that I felt comfortable with my decision for any dj I hired. I think you get a lot of great opinions and info from the knot but picking a dj is tricky....
  • We also used Mike Staff. They are well known in the biz. They are also on the high end price-wise.

They made a pretty big screw up on my wedding day (see the vendor sticky for more info.), but were also nice and definitely kept the dance floor going all night. If I had to redo it though, I might have shopped around and found someone cheaper. I also quoted Celebration DJs and they were $700 or $800 for 6 hours and were rated #2 on WDIV's Best Of list last year.

It doesn't seem like you need any more recommendations, but I'll just throw out there the Panache Group (epanache.com). When we were looking for DJs I sent out an email and BCCed 5 different companies. Within 5 minutes, Lauren from Panache was calling me (on a Saturday, no less), and I felt instantly taken care of. She answered all of my questions, and asked some of me that made me feel like they instantly knew what they were doing. I spoke with Zac, the music director, a couple days later and he seemed like he totally 'got' us. As the follow up emails from the other companies (riddled with grammatical errors, I might add) started coming in days later, it completely cemented my choice to go with Panache. First impressions are important, and response times for an event like a wedding are even more so, which is why I wanted to share my experience thus far. They also offer live music for ceremonies and cocktail hours, if you are in the need for that as well.

  • I have to say that working with Tim at Mike Staff has been an absolute pleasure.  He is pretty much the go to guy who runs your first appointment and answers all subsequent questions you may have.  He is so personable and on the ball.

We have had a great experience with them so far.  They have a DVD that shows you a five minute blurb on each of the 25-30 DJ's they have on staff.  Tim picks 3 or 4 that he thinks would suit you based on what you ask for and their availibility on your day.  You can see each DJ's style, hear his/her voice, background in the field, etc. before making a choice.

I haven't met our DJ yet but so far my experience with the company has been stellar.

I SECOND THIS.  Panache has been over and above every expectation I've ever had for a DJ.  For us, the key was finding someone who wasn't a hack - someone who didn't need to get the crowd going by stepping onto my dance floor.  Someone who could read the crowd without taking requests or with a strict playlist.  They are cool with my do not playlist - and have been uber helpful thus far.  They have an incredibly interactive website to help you through the planning process - but are also there for you the second you call on them.  When we met with Jonas, the owner, we knew instantly we were not in a sales meeting.  We felt like he was interviewing us just as much as we were interviewing them - and that is important.  It felt to me like if they felt they couldn't fit with us - they'd somehow let us down over ice cream ahahha. But honestly - they have been awesome and reliable.  I can't wait to hear what they do at my reception (and more importantly - what they DONT do)!
  • We've looked into Mystro Entertainment. There are tons out there! hope you find one that fits your style!
