Help! Maid AND matron of honor?

I have two very close girlfriends- one that has been my best friend/roommate for 9 years but we have become a bit distant this past year and another that I have been friends with for the past 5 years but we have only just gotten extremely close this year. The latter knows my FI and I so well as a couple. The former knows me a little better(more history there) but doesn't know my FI and I as a couple very well. I am having 5 total girls in my bridal party. My instinct is to ask my newer but currently closer friend to be my maid of honor. Should I leave it at that or should I have my other friend be my matron of honor too? My FI is fine with whichever decision I make but I need some advice.

Before I picked my bridal party I was given the advice to pick people who know you and your fi as a couple. This day is about you two together not as separate people. So all the people up there supporting you should know both of you guys very well.

So following my own advice I would go with the friend that knows you to best.

Ditto. Or if you are worried about offening someone, have a maid of honor and a matron of honor...no harm in that.

If you're having that difficult of a time distinguishing between the two, ask both. There's no rule on how many MOHs you have, you'll just have to distinguish their "duties" a bit (only one can sign the marriage license, for example).

I'm personally in the camp that your bridal party should be the people who know YOU the best, though it's certainly good if they know your FI as well. I get the advice LOTON received, but had I gone that route, my bridal party would be completely different than it is. Sure I may hang out with certain girls the most because they also happen to be FI's friends or are dating FI's friends, but when it comes down to it, my support system are the friends I've known well before I even met FI.

That's the criteria I went with, but I really think you can go either way.

If this decision is difficult for you, I would just have both.

I'm having a maid and matron of honor. My matron of honor will be the one giving the speech and signing the marriage license but I wanted to give my other friend the title as well.

Like PP's said, you can have more than one MOH, there are no rules about that.  If you are having a tough time deciding pick them both and a do a matron & maid of honor.

I picked my bridal party based on my best friends in the entire world, they are my friends from college and live all over the country and don't know my FI and I as a couple as well as people that live here.  I was having a tough time picking so I ended up picking all 6 of my best friends, and I'm glad I did. I also only have one sister so picking a MOH was easy =)
