Bridesmaid Dress Help

So I have 6 bridesmaids in 4 different states.  I really want the girls to like the dress (along with me) because I've been a bridesmaid in the past and have felt uncomfortable in the dress the bride chose.
There is no way to get everyone at the same place at the same time until the wedding weekend so I was thinking of getting a dress from Davids Bridal (nationwide store) and getting feedback about a few dress from the girls. Has anyone gone through this and have a good way to do this and tackle the situation?

Re: Bridesmaid Dress Help

  • Before I decided to go with BM dresses just the same color, I had all my BMs look at a few styles online and let me know what they thought.  If that's the best way that you can think of for them to match go for it.

  • I think your ideas are fine.

I had one BM out of state, and their ages ranged from 16 (my daughter) to 50's, their sizes ranged from size 8 to size 18. Their heights ranged from 5'1" to 5'9".

Have you decided on a color? Our colors were black and white/cream with silver accents. Once I decided that, and that they were going to have black dresses, I just let them all pick their own flattering little black dress. Our wedding was last August and while I didn't dictate the length, everyone was more comfortable in short dresses.

As you can see from the picture below, while none of them had the same dress, they all have a dress they can wear again because they chose it. And I thoght they all looked fabulous.

I know David's Bridal has several dress styles that can all be ordered in the same color. If you give them a few dresses to choose from, but in the same color, it might be easier for them if there are 4-5 styles. This is especially appreciated if they have any body image issues they want to hide/accentuate. Most people know by their 20's what looks good on them.

    Good luck.
  • I had 11 bridesmaids and several were from out of town. I also wanted them comfortable and to not spend a lot bc in all honesty they will most likely never wear it unless for halloween :) I wouldn't limit yourself to david's bridal. They are affordable but I wasn't impressed with their selection or customer service last year when I was looking. There are other ways around the fittings for the out of town BM's. I chose 4 diffferent dresses that were similiar styles and same color and then the store employees helped the girls determine which was a better fit for their body type even by only phone. Also, if you chose a normal brand, they can look for bridal shops near them that carry the brand to go and try it on. They may need to make up an excuse or pretend to be a bride, bc the shop may charge an appointment fee if they know the real purpose.
  • Im in a similar situation, I have 9 bridesmaids and they are scattered all over the country. They're also all shapes and sizes and I wasn't about to try and put them all in the exact same dress. I ended up not really liking much of David's selection, so I ended up going with The Dessy Groups Alfred Sung line. I picked a length, fabric and color and am just letting the girls choose their style. There are a lot to choose from and the line is available to see at a lot of bridal boutiques around the country. Good luck!
  • I was in a wedding this past August, and the bride was in the same position-and I will actually be in the same position with my bridesmaids for my upcoming wedding. She originally looked at David's Bridal, but they had a somewhat limited choice in colors, so she went with a dress by Dessy, which we were all able to order online.

I know the online ordering is a scary bit-but she handled this really well. I was the only bridesmaid living near her, so her and I went to the bridal salon and took some advice from the staff there for styles that work well on most body types (it was a sweetheart neckline, with empire waist-tea length) Each girl was instructed to get their measurements from a seamstress, and we got the dresses altered in our home towns as needed. I can honestly say all four of us were very happy with the dresses, and we had no problems. The best part-2 of us were working on losing weight right up to her wedding, but because the bottom was very flowy (chiffon) neither of us ended up needing further alterations, even though we'd lost weight.
  • I had 6 bridesmaids, all most in different states, ranging in size from 2 to 20. After taking two girls to a local store, we decided to go to David's Bridal. We tried on a few dresses and told the other girls to go to their local DB and try on those dresses and send me pictures. I have 2 maids of honor and they had one style dress, and the rest had another style, all in the same color and it was perfect.

David's Bridal can be a terrible experience. I went there a few times and had terrible service. They are understaffed and rude, especially once they know that you don't plan to buy anything, since they work on commission. But, they are easy, convenient, and decently priced.
