Within 5 years they will have 48 fewer parishes. This could be an issue for those of us getting married in the church. 

I would also hate to be married in the church and then find that in the next few years that it got closed.

This actually already happened to my church a few months ago.

They ended up merging with another church..really what this meant was a "closing of the church" ceremony which was a very interesting experience and then a "reopening " the next week with the new name, etc. We kept our building (which is great because it is BEAUTIFUL), it just became another parish's building also.

It's cool because there are more people now.  However things are a bit...extended. If you've been to church in the last week (Catholic) they made a lot of changes to the mass (like a lot of chanting, different phrasing of several prayers). My church, since the merger has also started doubling up on parts of the mass...they are said in English and then repeated in Hmong. I don't mind, it's just a lot of changes in a short amount of time and wiill take awhile to get used to.

I'm not getting married in a church btw.

I can't get the link for the archdiocese to open, but based on what I saw last night, it shouldn't impact anyone's wedding plans at this point. They were talking about plans a few years in advance.

Our parish in Warren actually I think was on the earlier list. What we were told was that our parish and another one were "buddies".........whichever of the church's pastors died first (creepy, I know), that parish would be incorporated into the other. Since our parish priest was recently accused of molestation over 20 years ago and has been removed, I suspect the other parish will become the primary/only one. Our church is less than 1/2 a mile away; the other is about 3 miles away. To be honest I'm surprised there has not been more of this consolidation over recent years. It's very expensive to run churches and church buildings, and the fact that many are within 5 miles of each other indicates a lot of consolidation can occur. There are also a lot fewer people attending masses, so less income. The only people who will be impacted greatly are the elderly who perhaps walk to church. Of course they are probably also the most generous ones.
