In Need of Venue Ideas

My finacee and I are planning a winter themed wedding for January 2013. I have no problem doing a lot of the work - such as making center pieces, decorations, etc... Well the problem I am having is finding a venue that is plain and simple enough. I'm not looking for something elegant, extravagant, or pre-decorated. Does anyone have any venues in mind that let you "just rent the hall"? I haven't had any luck finding any. By the way I live in Roseville (very close to lake st. clair) and would like to keep it an hour or less away. Any ideas would help!

Thank you in advance

  • You could try the Gazebo in Warren.

  • I would definately look into Belle Isle, the conservatory ( it is AMAZING in winter!) and then the Casino for your reception. It is just a "raw" space, and it is spacious and the spanish architecture is wonderful.

  • I would recommend you check out Lakeland Manor on Harper.  I'm having my January 5th wedding there.  it is very nice but not super fancy and the decor is totally neutral.  It's not predecorated or anything - although they will help you with that if you want.  That being said, it's not raw space and you can't bring in your own vendors.  Not sure how important that is to you.  They gave us a really reasonable deal.  PM me if you want more specifics.

Another option would be the VFW hall on Little Mack in SCS.  It's a pretty new building.  I called on the rates (very reasonable) but never went it to check it out so I can't speak to decor.  It really is a "rent the hall" type place - you bring in all your own vendors.  We ended up not checking it out because the capicity was 175 (I think).  Too small for us.

I hope you find something fabulous!
  • It would help to know the following:

    Budget?

How many people (some venues have max capacity or minimum count for rooms)?

    How much for rental?

Are you looking for a space where you can bring in your own caterer, or do you want food & alcohol included?

The way you worded your question, it would appear you want a bare space with the ability to bring in your own caterer/food/alcohol. From someone who did that, you have to keep in mind that you will be paying for EVERYTHING to fill the space that you would normally get with a "standard banquet hall" : tables, chairs, linens, utensils, glasses, plates, possibly serving items/chafing dishes. Depending on the venue you find and the items they may include all the things I just mentioned will cost from $5-$10 per person before you look at food and alcohol. Just wanted to alert you to that fact.

The ladies here are very helpful, but we can help you more if you give us more info

    Congrats on your engagement!
  • Not sure if cost is an issue but...I am getting married December 1st of this year at the Belle Isle Casino. I would just suggest that you look at all of your options not just DIY. For my amount of guest (400+) this was my best option, but if I did something smaller, a inclusive hall would have probably been more cost effiecent. Renting china (if you would real china), hiring bartenders, waiting staff, clean up crew, etc. gets really costly very fast. I am in no way saying don't do it, but just be sure to look at all avenues because you may end up spending more doing DIY.

On the other hand, I love the casio. It does have some unique challenges like being 2 floors, not a ton of electrical outlets, and other logistics. If using this place, I would suggest using vendors that have been here before. They have a great idea of what works and doesn't because they have been there and tried it (Im glad not to be the lab rat). Hope this helps some.
