Name Change Process/Procrastination

Can we talk about name changing?  I know this has been SO overdone in the past but…. I have looked back at old posts and….I just can’t help myself. 

I started to research the process on oakgov.com.  It looks like I fill out the Name Change Petition but then it talks about getting finger printed and attending a hearing.  I don’t think this is right.  This is what http://tinyurl.com/293bbg4. Am I looking at the wrong thing?  Can you point me in the right direction?   

I’m also feeling SO sentimental about my maiden name – that’s why I’ve procrastinated this long.  I don’t want to loose my middle name either.  This is just. who. I. am. But I never thought twice about it before and I do want to take my hubbys name.  So…..Taryn, didn’t you keep your maiden name as a second middle name?  Have you run into any issues with that?  Any advice?  Anyone else?

I kept it as a second last name.

You have to do SOS & Social Security office, not that form you linked, I'm not sure what that is.

I'm still sentimental about it. Especially today when I tried to create a gmail address & it's really hard now that I have a SUPER common name. I thought I was looking forward to anonymity

That form sound like if you want to legally change your name, not to change your last name because of marriage.

I think what you have is a legal name change- like if your last name is S#ithouse and you want to change it to Latrine- anyone know the movie reference? lol

I'm procrastinating because my purse got stolen, but I've been realizing how attached I am to my maiden name- I've had it for 34 years after all!  I have changed my name at social security, and I'll do the rest of it, but there is really something sad about giving up a part of yourself basically. Although I guess it is just a name!

From what I've seen, it was recommended to go to Soc Security first, then do your driver's license.  I just took in a certified copy of the marriage license in to Soc Security & they are sending me a new card. Weird, because I didn't have photo ID, just my temporary duplicate license, but whatev! Credit card companies and whatnot can basically change it by faxing in a copy of the license, but you might want to check to be sure.

For me it was never an option to keep my maiden name- either hyphenated or as my middle name because it'd be 19 letters long! I must admit that I like the way both last names looks on FB since I put Colleen Maiden Married on there, though. I pondered keeping it professionally, but most people just know me as Colleen, so I doubt they'd even notice- especially since email will forward if sent to my "old" last name.

I'm doing it right now.

Went to Social Security FIRST because I've been told the SOS will NOT change your license until SSA does it first.  I took my driver's license, my CERTIFIED marriage license, and the SSA required form.  It took about 2 minutes once I got to a window.  I'd suggest making an appointment, as I had to wait for over an hour to get called to a window.

Then go to the SOS.  You'll have to pay for a new license and they take a new picture -- so look pretty that day   They only wanted my certified marriage license.

All of my credit card companies changed my name over the phone and are all sending me new cards.  AAA also changed my name over the phone.

I have to go into the bank still w/ a copy of my certified marriage license...apparently at Comerica you have to do it in person at the bank.  Go figure.

Any attorneys out there changing your name -- the State Bar of Michigan has a form you can fill out and fax to them (with supporting documentation).

I still have to figure out changing my mortgage into my new name and all of my insurance (auto/home/etc).  I haven't looked into that yet
