    I'm getting married in April and registered back in July I think. I was just excited to do it, but doing it that early is a risk because items could be discontinued. I was willing to take the chance and plan to check the registries before my showers to make sure everything is still available at the store and swap any items I need to.

    I'm getting married in June and my FI and I did ours about a month ago.  Yes, things can get discontinued but this way people can get stuff for christmas for us off of it.  A number of our relatives said we should do this to make things easier for them.

    My personal opinion is that you register when people are about to get you gifts. We registered in February, invites went out in march and our wedding and shower were both in may. You really don't need to do it any sooner and as the pps have mentioned, you run the risk of items being discontinued.

    I started mine WAY early, like 6-7 months, but that was only the target registry and I did that one online only I never went into the store. I started that then mainly because I was bored one day and I want to have time to decided what I really wanted on there. Plus I knew getting DH to give a solid yes or no on something would take forever mostly because we work opposite schedules. But i took my time going through that one for months before I finally decided what all to get rid of.
    The kohls one we did in the store and the was a few months before, again it was kinda early because I had to take the time with Ken that we had so we just went after church one day.
    I don't think it really matters but like PP's said the earlier you register the more you run the risk of things being discontinued which happen to me a few times which didn't bother me untill a bed set I LOVED was discontinued. Just be aware of that.

    My wedding is in May, and I think I will register in Jan...I think the shower is going to be March.
