My best girl friend has been in Japan for about four years now, stationed with her husband, who is in the navy. They finally got the news this week that his paperwork has come through and they're coming home (for good!) on January 15th.
She's pretty down b/c they were supposed to be home on November 1st, but a bunch of people messed up the paperwork (military beaurocracy at its finest), and things kept getting pushed back, and now they're missing the holidays with their families for the fourth year in a row when all she'd been looking forward to for the whole year was finally getting to spend Thanksgiving and Christmas with them.
I saw this fun idea yesterday in Martha Stewart Lliving that's sort of like an advent calendar, but it's a bunch of tiny packages all linked together on a string. You open one a day as a countdown. I got really excited about the idea of sending her one for Christmas that would last until the day they fly home.
What do you think would be good to include? Everything has to be pretty inexpensive because there'll be about 25 presents. I was thinking a few snacky candy things, a pair of mittens for Michigan winters, a little tin of gourmet sea salt b/c she loves to cook AND to remind her of the joy of MI winter driving....
Do you have any ideas?
