I have still not cleaned my dress, I'm a bad girl!  So can't help you there.  As for SS, you can go as soon as you get your marriage license back from the town.  You just need to bring it to the SS office.  You'll need the marriage license for your driver's license too and any bank accounts you change.

FYI I haven't done the passport yet, but I was warned to do this last since you have to mail them your marriage license. GL!

I haven't done my dress yet either, OOPS!! I was told not to change anything until my social security was changed, especially my work stuff, cause it can mess up your taxes apparently.  I got my new card in a week.  The day I went to the office and got the receipt was the day I did everything else.  Except my passport I haven't done yet, I'm not leaving the country that I know of anytime soon and I don't have the $75 at the moment either.

I'm an HR/Payroll person - the previous post is correct.  The change on your paycheck is not supposed to be done until you have changed your SS card.  Actually, the name on your paycheck should be exactly as it is on your SS card -so if you have your middle name on the card, that is how you paycheck is to be made out.

Does anyone know if you have to do your social security card before your liscense? I have not done either yet. I guess I need to at least before tax season.

I did my dress at the bridal salon I went to..As for Social Security I did it a couple week after the wedding (as I wanted the name change to be official by the end of the fiscal year for tax purposes)

I did my social security pretty much right away.  I don't know how accurate this information is but I was advised at work to do it asap because of tax purposes (having everything in the same name).  Banking was easy and done when we merged our accounts.  I haven't done my license yet because we are *hopefully* moving soon and I figured I would do the address and name together.  Haven't done any credit cards yet, figured the same on those (name and address together).   Good luck!  Oh, my dress is still hanging in our bedroom in the bag...I still like to look at it sometimes!

I ordered a kit from David's Bridal online and you send out whatever you want to be cleaned and preserved and they do it and then ship it back to you (it doesn't matter if you bought your dress from them either). I sent out my dress and veil and just got them back a couple of weeks ago. It looks great in the box, I'm definitely glad I did it. It was the cheapest option I found too.And to answer pp's question, you do have to get your SS card before your license. Well at least that's how it is in NC anyway...

I did my license before my SS only cause the DMV opened before the SS office, LOL!!  DMV did not need anything but my marriage cert and current license.

I took my dress back to Town Shop Bridal and had it cleaned and preserved.  I had all my documents  changed within a month of the wedding.  You can't do the DL without the SS card etc.   Then I worked on contacting credit cards, Frequent Flyer programs, and any of our bills that were in my maiden name.   Most of those people asked for a copy of my new driver's license before they would make the change.

I know many posters have commented on how quickly you are able to change it, but I will let you know that you are in no rush.  I waited 15 months after my wedding to go the SS office.  I kept my name at work, and just did my taxes in my maiden name last year - no issues at all and we filed jointly.  Once I decided to make the change, it's SS office, then DMV - you can go in the same morning though.  I then notified work for tax stuff only - I go by my maiden name at work -  and from there I am slowly changing credit cards, utilities, etc.

Thanks so much ladies!I knew that I couldn't change it at work until going to SS and I am not changing my DL until it expires next year as i bought a new car the week of the wedding (eek) and the registration, DL and insurance all have to match and my friend who is in insurance said to wait because it would be a nightmare.  I don't have to worry about my passport and if i do need to go somewhere, as long as my credit card matches, i will be fine. You ladies were VERY helpful!  TY!!!!!!
