For married ladies who went through the process - do you know if in NY you are able to change your middle name also when you go to change your last? I would like my name to end up: MyFirst MyMiddle MyLast HISLast
Not hyphenate, but just add my maiden name to part of my middle name
I heard for NYC at least they don't do middle name changes, just sur name changed (unless you like petition the courts or something absurd).
Any advice is appreciated!!
Oh also, even though I live in NJ right now, my license and all is still NY so I assume I need to go through NY to change my name. If NJ makes whole process of making my maiden name part of my middle I guess I will just change permanent residence to here but then my car insurance will go through the roof and I don't want that since we will be moving to NY eventually anyway.
Re: Name Change in NY
(look for surname options)
And yeah, you would change your license in whatever state it is issued in. The social security office probably doesn't matter (which you have to do first), but you'll need to go to a ny dmv to change your license.
Your name change will be through your marriage license which will be issued in the state you get married in. The marriage license is the proof of name change to then change social security and driver's license and all the rest. I don't know about the middle name part though.

I just noticed this part. That's not the way it works. Your name change goes on the marriage license, so if it is issued in ny, you can't add your middle name. You would have to do a legal name change in either NY or NJ after the fact.
On the actual marriage license, you can not change your maiden name to your middle name. You can only either keep your name as is, take your future husband's last name (keeping your current middle name), or combine both of your last names (either hyphenate both of your last names or actually combine them into one name).
On my marriage license I took my husband's last name but kept my current middle name. After I received the marriage license in the mail, I took it to the social security office to get a new social security card. When you fill out the paper work there, write your name how you really want it (which I did my first name, my Maiden name (as my middle name) and my husband's last name. They didn't give me any issues about this!
Once you receive your social security card with your name how you want it, use this to update your driver's license, passport, etc.

No no no! Don't try this! A friend of mine did this, and changed her name at the SS office with no problems, but the DMV refused to allow her to do this because it did not match her driver's license. Please look at the link I posted, those are your surname options without doing a legal name change. Anything else, and you risk getting stuck having to do a legal name change, like my friend did, because she got stuck in limbo.

That is so interesting. I am not changing my name when we get married but that's pretty cool. Is your husband ok with it?
Fi wants me to have his last name, and I don't want to get rid of my last name completely! So Maiden as my middle name is my compromise.
