question - do used dresses sell?

i've been thinking about what i want to do with my dress after the wedding and i'm contemplating trying to sell it....but would someone purchase my dress after being worn?
i'd of course have it cleaned, but i'm not sure how that would go over. thoughts?

Re: question - do used dresses sell?

  • I'd definately buy a used wedding dress if it were my size and style. It's way cheaper than buying a new dress. When selling your dress, the trick is to find someone the same size who wants a dress in your style.

  • I'm not really sure but post it on multiple sites, not just TK. You'll probably have a better chance of selling it.
  • Just post it for sale, not until (whatever) date. Then see if it sells.
  • I got my dressed used.  There is a store the is just bridal consignment in the twin cities.  I went there and got a dress.  I believe the past bride got some money of that.

You could try craigslist too or donate it to charity.  I think Goodwill has a bridal fashion show and I think there is a breast cancer foundation that can use them.
  • you have to be in the right place at the right time.

a lot of times if you donate it you can get a tax refund, which may be a good option for you.
  • i'm definitely looking to find a used dress before going to order one in a bridal store. Go for it!
  • I think it's also important not to ask too much money for it. If you spent $1000 for it, don't expect to get $900 back. You have to be realistic about it, and I think that's a big part of it. I know for me, personally I'd rather spend the extra $100 or $200 to get the dress brand new.
  • I have had mine listed for almost 6 months now at 75% of the retail and still haven't been able to sell it.

I think if you're a bridal size 6-8 and your dress is hemmed for 5'9" ish it would be pretty easy. I receive a lot of interest but I am short and have a larger bust.
  • I got really lucky with my dress. I found the  alfred angelo dress I wanted for $200 on ebay. It is one size too big, but I can get it altered to the way I need because she never had it done. I'd say it's kinda hit or miss- but it's worth a try. you never know who is looking for "that" dress and it may be the only way they can afford their dream dress.
