Dear Cabinet Guy -

Can you please give us a quote that's at least close to our cabinet allowance? When we met with you and told you what we had to spend, you said we'd be really happy with the quote. Why is the one you sent 25% higher than what we said? I guess we should be happy it's not 50% higher. Because, it would be nice to do business with you. You know, keeping the independent guy working and all. There's a reason Home Depot does so well. They have prices that are affordable!

Looking forward to your next quote and some lower priced options.

Sincerely,
Newlywed who is anxiously waiting for the apartment to be finished

To my fabulous friends and family,

I had a wonderful shower and I'm so glad that you came to share the day with me. But, next time you go to a shower, please remember to enclosed the gift receipt so that when the bride opens up your generous gift but it's the wrong color (or whatever) she can return it without any undo stress.

Believe me, I've got plenty of angst without having to worry about whether or not the clerk at the store is gonna give me the stink eye over trying to exchange my wonderful plates that are just in the wrong color.

And, the store clerk doesn't want to deal with me either! :)

Can't wait to see you all at the wedding! 16 days!
xoxo

Terrie - t's hard to try to keep the local/independent guy/store working.. I feel your pain. I tried hard to keep all the wedding related business local to Mahopac and for the most part I did pretty well, but there were a few items that I just couldn't do locally without breaking the bank.
I hope your local guy can see his way clear to lowering his quote - if you've asked. But you gotta do, what's right for you and your budget. :)

p.s. - Jamie - I LOVE this open letter format. What a great vent!

OMG! Are you in Mahopac? That's my hometown! When planning the wedding I really tried to keep everything as close as possible. But you are right - it wan't able to be done-
church, reception, rehearsal, shower, bouquet and church flowers - all from Mahopac
limo- Peekskill
reception flowers - Somers
DJ - Wappingers Falls
Photo / Video - Hopewell Junction
hair and makeup - Mohegan Lake
my dress - Rockland store (technically NJ company)

So, in the end I felt pretty good about myself for staying "close to home" with a lot of the stuff. But yes, it's hard.

and then, of course,
invitations - internet company - but I tried really hard to find a company locally. And since I used to work at a company that sold invitations, I knew that the mark-up in the books were outrageous, so I was not happy when some said they could save me 10%.

We went yesterday to look at Carpet and Vinyl tiling and that store had a cabinet place next door. So we went and checked it out. Hopefully we'll find something!

What a small world! - yep we're in Mahopac, I'm originally from White Plains and FI's been up here for 16 years.
The flowers are from Mahopac as is the DJ. The photographer isn't from Mahopac, but from Carmel. The photographer's cousin is in Mahoapc, does that count? LOL
I did own invitations, I'd just lost my job and had PLENTY of time on my hands. And, likewise the centerpieces.
The dress is from DB in Danbury, so that's the biggest thing that wasn't local.
The only thing I HAD to farm out was the favors http://www.etsy.com/listing/51640482/75-bird-seed-heart-wedding-favors-free and only because I couldn't figure out how to do it for less myself.
My SIL is a crafty person and is doing the gazebo decorations, and cake topper for us as a gift. She's in Baltimore, so I guess that doesn't count as local either :)

Good luck with the cabinets and the flooring! It'll all come together eventually!
