priest & a rabbi (no its not a joke)

A little get to know me - I'm catholic and FH is jewish. Neither one of us practice the religion and don't really care who marries us. FH would prefer to get a justice of the peace (to make things easier), HOWEVER my mother refuses to let us do this. She is forcing us to get a priest and a rabbi.

So my question is has anyone had an inter-faith marriage and what did it cost you? So far the rabbi wants to charge $750 and who knows what the priest wants to charge? And on top of that we have to pay $600 for the ceremony site at our venue. These people are thiefs!!!

Also does anyone have a rabbi they would recommend?

Do you need both?  What about just using an interfaith minister?  I have seen blended ceremonies performed by a few interfaith ministers and they really do a great job.  One was a mix of Jewish, Catholic and Hindu that really stands out as being one of the best ceremonies I've ever attended.  Is Mom paying for your wedding?  Just wondering why she's insisting if it's your wedding.  You guys need to do what's best for you.

H and I are an interfaith couple (I'm Jewish, he's Catholic) and we were married by a judge and were very happy.  The judge actually didn't charge us because he was friends with my father so I can't help there.  If you are looking to go religious, I'd follow pp suggestion and look for an Interfaith Minister.  Whatever you do, you aren't going to find a Catholic priest anyway.  Depending on what day of the week your wedding is will probably also affect if you can have a Rabbi (no Friday nights and shouldn't be til after sunset on a Saturday).  An Interfaith Minister can incorporate the religious aspects you and your fi find important and may be enough to please your mother.

Hm I've never heard of an interfaith minster before. I'll have to look into that (somehow). Shes contibuting money but I don't think shes offically paying for the officant. Shes insisiting on it because she sees it as I wont be "legally married under God's eyes" blah blah blah. It is one thing that she will not give up on. Anything else is not an option and bascially I don't want to have a year long fight about this.

So then new question: does anyone know an interfaith minister?

Jean Stark has interfaith ministers.  I think her company is called  Hudson Valley Ceremony's or Weddings.  I am in the same situation.  I did want a minister and a rabbi but the rabbi I called quoted me $800 which is way out of my budget!  He was the rabbi of a temple I went to many years ago in Newburgh and he is very good, just too expensive.  I'm going to try to find a less expensive one but if I can't, I will just get an interfaith minister.  Also, I'm not sure a priest will marry you out of the church so you may need a minister for that.  Let me know what you find out since I'm in the same boat.

A Catholic Priest won't marry you at your reception venue. But (if you are willing to get married at a church) you should be able to find one that will co-celebrate with a Rabbi because your FI is Jewish.

If you want to get married at your venue, a minister and a rabbi is going to be your best bet. Or the interfaith minister. www.hudsonvalleyweddings.com has a bunch of officients listed. and likes pp said Jeanne Stark's company is a wonderful resource. Definitely give her a call.

    Good luck!

It's not highway robbery.  There are very few who are willing to do a ceremony with each other so it's a supply & demand but also because it involves a lot of work to coordinate.
