NWR: teeth whitening

Hi everyone,I was just wondering if anyone had any teeth whitening recommendations and how much the cost. My dentist does it for about $350 so I figured I'd shop around a little before committing. TIA

They just opened a new SmileBright at the Natick Collection - we're going to do it the week before the wedding. It's $99/149 depending on what package you want. It's a grand opening special, but it looks like their everyday prices are reasonable. I tried the Zoom (which made my teeth KILL but did make them brighter for awhile) and I think it's similar. I had a terrible experience with BrightSmile - Literally no whitening and EXCRUCIATING pain as I had a negative reaction that evidently some people have to it (but i didnt know beforehand)FI also had it done and did not have pain, but had barely any whitening - Huge waste of money. If you look into reviews online, there are lots of people with similar results and I wish I checked before doing it. That being said, I have the trays from the dentist where you use the gel and that works VERY well. I've used them off and on for years whenever I want to brighten up. Great investment as they are a few hundred dollars but you can just get more bleach and use them for life.

Amber - hmm, you're making me rethink this now! I had a bad reaction to the Zoom and I think they use the same stuff? It's $600 at my dentist, so that just isn't going to happen - my teeth aren't that bad (I don't smoke, drink caffeine, or soda - they are just yellowish because I was sick as a kid or something - I dunno, someone told me that). Over the counter products don't work for me in the least and I've tried them all - but I'm concerned about FI because he WAS a smoker and his teeth are just too yellow. He'll probably need something stronger?

I do think Zoom is the same - My dentist at home said his wife had the same reaction and that's why they refused to offer the services in their office. It's really an awful experience for someone to go through... I couldnt eat or sleep for ~ 30 hours and was in such terrible pain that I had to get prescrip meds just to get through it. The bleach in the trays is just fine though - A little sensitivity maybe but that's it.

That is a good deal though as our BriteSmile (if its the same) was $600 each person

I know this isn't as intense as the dental whitening, but I had really great results with the Crest White Strips! I used the advanced seal strips, my teeth are now beyond the typical scope on my dentist's shade measurement. Good luck!

I've tried a few different things:(1) Crest Whitestrips - I think they are like $25 for the 2 week kind, which I hear is the best.  They made my teeth so sensitive though that I never could get past day 3 or 4.  Did notice some whitening though.  Oh, yeah, also, you put the strips on for 30 minutes/day, top & bottom--they made me drool & kept sliding around.(2) Rembrant 2 hour kit - I think it was $20 at Target.  This one has a "tray" you form to your upper & lower teeth, & fill with gel.  You do 20 min on, 10 off & repeat 3 more times (that's how you get it done in 2 hrs).  I had NO sensitivity for the first hour.  At about 1h 15 min I started to have some sensitivity, and I was counting down the minutes for the last "cycle."  At first I didn't really notice a difference, but over the next couple of days I did.  My teeth weren't horrible to begin with, and I think this might be good for people who want "touch ups."  They also have a money back guarantee (which I was going to use at first when I didn't think it worked :).(3) ZOOM whitening - last month my dentist had a special for ZOOM whitening PLUS the trays (for touch ups) for $350 total (normally the trays were a few hundred--I forget now how much, and the ZOOM like $800, I think).  Actually, I don't know if it was officially "ZOOM" whitening, but the same kind of idea.  They basically first protected my gums, lips & tongue with some gel stuff & prepped me--the hygenist took a long time to do this, and I've heard horror stories about them NOT and getting burned, so I was glad.  Then she spread on the bleach and I sat with a UV lamp on them for maybe 15 or 20 minutes at a time.  Then she would come back, clean me up a bit and reapply the bleach.  She did it 4 times.  My teeth were definitely sensitive for a few days, but using Sensodyne really helped.  Again, I didn't notice a huge difference at first, but they seemed to get brighter over the next few days.  They also gave me enough gel for the at home whitening with the trays for like 10 sessions. If you just need to brighten up, I'd go with the Rembrant 2 hour kit.  If you really need to whiten a lot, I'd go with the dentist and use the Rembrant for touch ups.Sorry so long, but HTH!

Hi, My friend is sitting next to me right now who is a dental hygienist...she said that the price that you were given for teeth whitening doesn't sound like to much depending on how they do the procedure. There are different types of whitening options....there is in office, take home trays and prof. crest whitestrips...she recomends any of the above but for the $350 she hopes you are getting trays or an in office procedure. Both of those options can run you as much as 8 or 9 hundred dollars. HTH.

Thanks so much everyone - this helps a lot. At the dentist they said they take a mold of your teeth to make the trays and then give you bleach to put in them. The money I suppose is for the mold so the bleach gets in the cracks. Not sure if that's worth $350. Zoom sounds scary though. I tried Crest White Strips before and I noticed a little difference but I didn't like them because I felt like water started tasting funny while I was using them. bethluise, it sounds like $350 might be expected for trays?

Hi Bubbletea,Yes, $350 is def right for the trays.  The dentist she works for charges about twice that so you are getting a deal!!! I am having this done as well before the wedding.  The syringes that hold the bleach solution run about $25/tube and a tube could last 2-3 applications. I had this done prior to getting my braces and noticed I could stretch the tubes since my teeth were not bad to begin with.  Also FYI I did get a bit of sensitivity she recommended sensodyne before during and after whiting at least for a few weeks.  HTH and GL!
