Black wedding cake

Alright, so my colors are black and turquoise with bright gerber daisy accents.  What I really want is a black cake with gerber daisies all over it.  I have seen black cakes before, and I know they don't "scream wedding", and I know they might "discolor" but I am pretty non-traditional when it comes to this.  My cousin did my son's bday cake in black fondant, and no one changed colors....not sure if its just the way she did it, but has anyone done/eaten a black fondant cake before? Seriously thought, fondant is so gross, will anyone actually EAT it?!?

I will have to ask FI cousin what she used, but I am pretty sure she used dark chocolate buttercream frosting for her black cake.

I'm sure they could make black buttercream frosting, buttercream tastes so much better.  I think with the daisies it would look really cool.

If it won't stain your teeth, I think that would be cool...

We had a fondant cake for my son's 1st birthday. It was navy blue and baby blue. The navy did turn all our tongues blue but that was about it. Fondant can taste pretty gross I think but I LOVE the look of it and usually just eat the good stuff around it LOL.

My baker told me they wouldn't do dark blue on the layers of the cake the guests would eat because it will stain your teeth. Also, think of the horrible consequences if you dropped the black frosting on your dress. What I would do is use the blank fondant, fondant is wicked gross but looks phenomenal, and then just have regular buttercream under it. Best of both worlds, you get the look you want but without staining and with yummy frosting underneath the fondant.

I wouldn't go with black buttercream frosting. The color can bleed into the cake and onto everything-clothes, teeth, etc.  I know fondant tastes horrible, but if they ice with a thick layer of buttercream under you can request that they remove the fondant while cutting, but most guests will remove the fondant or eat around it anyway.  I have eaten a red cake as well as a balck cake and both tasted a littel copperish from the coloring although both colors were "no taste."

I originally wanted a black cake and our baker talked us out of it.  We were going to use butter cream and he had said it would turn teeth and tongues black.  So we decided to just do accents of black.

Thanks girls!! I definitely prefer the look of fondant, but would never have even thought of black buttercream. I will check those pics out once I leave work. You girls rock

 We are doing a black cake but are using dark choc ganache - it will be so yummy and rich but not stain our teeth. I personally don't like the taste of fondant so that is why we went this route.
