Dumb question? Moroccan table lanterns

Hi girls, I'm not sure if this is kind of an airhead question, but I thought I'd throw it out there since someone is bound to know... I'm looking at purchasing some white Moroccan lanterns for table centerpieces, but I want them to be gold. If I were to spray paint them, will the paint catch on fire when I put votives inside? Has anyone tried this? Here's a photo to give you an idea of what I am talking about: (hope that link works?) Thanks!! :)

Ooh, that's pretty! Not a dumb question, you don't want little bonfires in the middle of every reception table! I haven't done this so I can't give *real* advice, but my thinking is as long as the paint is very well dried, you should be fine. Maybe someone else can give you better direction on good spray paints to use.

Totally not a dumb question :) Those are super cute and will great in gold. Just make sure to check if the paint you use is flammable or not. You don't want to use flammable paint on anything near a flame. Also, you'll probably have to sand those damn some to get the old paint off. Make sure to buy good sand paper, not the cheap kind or it'll take you FOREVER and will be a major PITA.

Oooh, good call on the sandpaper and the paint too. Thank you both! (and thanks Shazzie for posting the pic correctly...not sure why I can never get it right the first time!) :)

I just asked fi about your little latern question and he seconded my flame retardent paint rec and he also has some advice about sand paper: Start with a sand paper that is #100 grit to get the initial paint off and then work your way up to a finer sand paper... #1000 or so. Home depot sells sand paper packages (with multiple grits) and apparently its fairly straight forward. gl!

October010 -- Oh gosh! Who knew it would be so complicated?! I'm so glad I posted this because I definitely would've just started spraying without even thinking about sandpaper. Thanks to you and your FI!! Ekobs -- I just found a lot of 25 of them on eBay, actually. I just searched for "wedding centerpiece lantern" or something like that and there they were. The seller's name is KarensCandlelightRoses (don't go outbidding me, now!). :) I had seen several previously but they were all either too expensive, the hang-y kind, or too small. These are just right! Thanks for the compliments, all :o)

    Thanks! And don't worry, I won't ;)

Of course! Fi thinks you might be able to spray right on the lanterns (if they are metal) BUT since "gold is tough" (quoting fi, lol) you might be better off sand papering. You might want to bring the actual lanterns in to home depot and ask some people there. They should be VERY helpful. When all is said and done make sure to post pics! I'd love to see the final product.

there is new spray paint now that you shouldn't need to sand before.  Search the Krylon website (thats the brand).  Also, make sure that the windows dont have a pane of glass on the inside.  It doesn't look like those do, but a lot of lanterns do and unless you can take it out, it would be really difficult to paint.

Great call, Lexi! I think I found it -- http://www.krylon.com/products/fusion_for_plastic_metallic_shimmer I *just* won the eBay auction, so they're officially mine! I will definitely post pics once I get this project on its feet... Thanks all again! :)
