What are you using....

to clean your rings with? I want my ring to sparkle and need some tips.  I pulled out the windex one day and my FMIL ask me what the hell I was doing?  Who knew?!

I got a jar of cleaning polish stuff from my jeweler. I plop my ring in for 30 seconds, then scrub it with a little brush thing it comes with, rinse under warm water, and towel dry. It's like magic!

I've hear Efferdent, then use a blow dryer, but I've never tried the Efferdent part!

Someone once told me to use alka seltzer or denture cleaning tables, let the ring soak and either air dry or use a hair dryer..don't towel dry. I also got a cleaning kit from my jeweler when my H bought my e-ring. I should clean it more than I do :)

someone recently suggested efferdent & a soft toothbrush :)

I am just gross and can't get my ring off my finger to clean it yet...although my shower is Sunday, so I should probably make it sparkly before then.  Mental note: get efferdent at CVS!

I swear to God I read in Boston Weddings Mag that you can use Vodka to clean your ring... I have been trying to read through all my mags to find that again but I havn't seemed to be able to locate it! Any one else ever hear this?

I heard the vodka thing from an aunt once but I'm not sure what's in that would clean diamonds. I always get deathly ill from the stuff :)

I will try the denture stuff and vodka and Windex--I never knew about any of these!  I use Dawn detergent, warm water and a soft tooth brush.

Meaghan - I've actually heard the vodka thing as well.  I was in this weird bar shortly after I got engaged and this old woman bartender came up to me and told me that. Never tried it though, I was too scared and was more focused on removing my hand from her grasp.

PS I spell my name the same way as you :)

Meaghan - too funny - my gran used to swear by gin (which I guess is close to vodka). She would put her rings in a glass with maybe 2 inches of gin and swish them round and then leave them for 15 minutes - they always looked pretty sparkly. Maybe the alcohol breaks down the grease from the lotion and other junk that gets on them?

Your best bet for at home is just mild soap and warm water.   You can use a little isopropyl alcohol if your ring only has hard gems in it, aka diamonds, sapphires, rubies.  But if you have any soft gems like emeralds, opals etc, you can damage them by getting alcohol on them.  My mom's a jeweler and has had horror stories regarding what people did to clean their rings.  Also, unless your ring is filthy, a polish cloth works well.

Most jewelers and some stores will clean your ring for free.  My mom does this for customers.  People come in, drop off their rings, and pick them up in about an hour.

Haha well I now have three things of ring cleaner, as my jeweler gives me a new one every time I stop in!   Would be happy to share :) Also as ashley.elissa mentioned, my jeweler does ring cleaning for free anytime, maybe yours does?  I saw Kay Jewelers doing free ring cleaning in the mall a couple weeks ago.

This is exactly what I was going to say.  Don't mess around with home cleaners.  Either use what your jeweler gave you or take it back to the store or to another jeweler to get it cleaned.

Home remedies can destroy certain types of stones and can actually cause build up and make your rings dirtier than they were before depending on what you use.  Toothpaste is a definite no-no, it causes micro-scratches to the surface of the metal.  For fine jewelry, take it to the jeweler, they'll usually do it for free anyway.

Another use for Windex - if your finger is swollen and you can't get your ring off, spray a little Windex on your finger, it dehydrates it so you can slide your ring off. My jeweler gave me that one when I first got my e-ring and it hadn't been sized yet.

I bought a little jar of jewelry cleaner for like $5 from Kohls.  It works great, comes with a little brush.  This brand:

    http://www.walgreens.com/store/catalog/Cleaners/Revitalizing-Jewelry-Cleaner/ID=prod3945994&navCount=1&navAction=push-product?V=G&ec=frgl_&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=sku3944843

This is great for quick cleaning.  I drop my ring in for 1 min, then brush it off and rinse under water.  Gets all the gunk off and makes it shiny.

And whenever i am in a jewelry store, i ask them to clean my ring too!

I just go to the jewelry store.  I have to take my ring every 6 months to get it checked (part of the lifetime replacement deal).  In between I just stop in any jeweler and they do it for free.

My jeweler said to use alcohol with a toothbrush.

Whatever you use, don't use one of those vibrating cleaning sets, it can loosen the stones.

The jeweler gave me a thing of cleaner and I have them clean it whenever I am in the area.

I also suggest just going to a jewelry store so they can clean it with steam.  Lucky for me, I work right next to Long's downtown where my FI bought my ring so it is easy for me to stop in all the time.  I get my ring cleaned every other week or so, sometimes more!

I use the sunshine products - if you've been to a larger jewelry show you have probably seen them - they come in these pink bottles.  My main reason for buying it was that it works on Yurman - which is huge since otherwise I have been told I need to send away to get my stuff cleaned.

I feel like we are in an episode of my big fat greek wedding with the windex.  I use dawn, letting my ring soak in it.  THe dawn is gentle and it lifts any grease.  Then I dip it in a jewelry cleaner, you can get them anywhere.  And it sparkles.
@ weeks before the wedding I will be bringing my ring to my jeweler who will re-dip it in the white gold, and buff it to make it sparkle.  That is a free service there because I bought my ring there.

Jewelry cleaner I got at the bridal expo it seems decent. I have to try the denture tabs definitely but do not want to buy them!
I've also used vinegar and windex.
