Wedding Vows & Ceremony Discussions

Vows

My fiancee and I both want to write our own vows, but I must admit I'm a little confused. I've always loved the idea of the "I do"s, and if we write our own vows instead of using traditional vows, would we even say "I do", seeing as it would be us reading our vows instead of a minister reading the traditional ones? I guess I've never seen a wedding in which the couple wrote their own vows, so I'm a little confused as to how it works!

Re: Vows

  • I think you could do both--speak with your officiant. I think you'd be able to read your own vows to each other first and then do some of the traditional vows or vice versa. But like I said, go over this with your officiant to figure it all out.

  • We're doing the traditional "I dos" and writing our own vows.  I think the setup is we do the traditional vows and then the JP is going to say "and now L & J have words they would like to share with each other.  Or something like that.

In some states, you need both.  The "I do" part is called the statement of intent and the other is your vow.  We had both in our wedding.

ETA - I can't think of a wedding I've attended where they didn't do both, actually.

Posted by DramaGeek[/QUOTE] Ditto this, that's how we're doing ours. Google Statement of Intent or Declaration of Intent. After that, our officiant will say a message to us and then we will do our own vows.
